Can I take transducer out of water while the unit is ON?

Can I take transducer out of water while the unit is ON? As far as i know you shouldn't do it with Raymarine products without turning the unit OFF because it can causesome troubles with the transducer.
PS I am asking because when I use my unit (transom mount, portable clamp) at inflatable boat and go high speed it is better to lift the transducer up to reduce pressure on the clamp and the transducer and to reduce flowing and splashing caused by the clamp.

I just noticed that the latest version of software has added "turn sonar OFF" to the shutdown menu, so now there is a quick way to turn the sonar off when not desired.
