Need help with SI please

First post hope I am in the right place. I have a 1197 6.310 1198 6.610 two 1199s 6.840 and a bow mount 360. Seven years ago, my 1197 had great SI pictures. It came with 4.22 software. Over the years as I upgraded software, little did I know my pictures were getting worse. Recently, I called Humminbird they said to only go back one version. Now I have software 6.310, the picture is better than with software 6.640. Is this a software issue or just me? Its driving me crazy! On the two 1199s with software 6.840 the pictures of rocks, bridges or something hard looks great; however fish and wood looks very bad. The wood is almost invisible and the fish are very fuzzy, blurry and small. The 360 pictures of fish are great if I'm on top of them with one of the 1199s. Everyone say you just need to adjust the settings; I would like to think I am smarter than that. Its not the transducer. This is with two different boats and 3 different transducers. Anyways trying to make it short as possible I could go on for days. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help provided.

I have tried every software version since 4.700 in my 1197 ...
I saw improvements in images (and function) all the way thru 6.310 ...
Every software version after 6.310 has steadily gone downhill ...
So 6.310 is where I stay ... Even tho I really liked that AS GPS HS antenna (AS GPS HS antenna won't run on 6.310)...
Here is some interesting reading that seems to indicate HB decisions in changing SI processing at that point in software versions has led us to where we are today with the antiquated 1197 ...
http://www.bbcboards.net/humminbird-sonar-gps/457916-83-khz-issue-little-birdie.html
My 1197 still serves me well ...
Maybe someday I can afford to upgrade ...I seem to always spend my extra money on xducer's and supplies building experimental setups to push thru my 1197 ...

There are no releases beyond 6.64 for the 1197, and I doubt there will be any more for it. The 2D is really bad at at 6.64...not sure about the SI.
Mine will never go beyond 6.310
Kosmo....What release are they at for the 998 now?
There have been some reports of improved SI and DI on the 7.20 revisions on the 99 series, I have also read that the 2D is better on the newer revisions, but still not as good as 6.49 and prior.
Do you still have networking to all your units at the current revision? I know there is a "line in the sand" that if you go beyond that revision, you will loose comm to the 1197........If it weren't for that possibility, you would probably be best taking all your units except the 1197 to their latest update......If you can't go back before 6.57, then you are best with the newest release.

I do still have network now,I guess I will try 7.20 for one of my 99s,cannot be any worse.I just don't understand why I can't get pictures like some I have seen.I have saw pictures of algae on trees,I can barely even see the trees. All I do is crappie fish I have trees sunk everywhere, not tops but trees!I sunk some sawmill slabs six feet tall standing straight up and never saw them again until I backed up to 6.310 on my 97 and then you got to go over them just right to barely see them.I thought they were gone until I dropped the aqua view down.I am open to any suggestions I'll try anything. Thanks

You certainly should have good images at those depths. Could you post some picture from each unit? Software is always a suspect... Just would like to see some pics. Thanks... Chuck

These are from my 1199 with 6.840. I don't have any recent pictures with my 1197 with 6.310. I will get some as soon as the rain stops. But they are not much better. Below is a list of what each picture is supposed to be. Thanks

Have tried 800Khz to try to get crisper images. You can sometimes find something with 455 Khz and then go scan it with a lower range setting at 800 Khz to get a better look at it.
You may want to compare the 1198 and 1199 800Khz and get the fix for the 1199 if it has problems ...while it is still under warranty

On both of my 1199s the screen gets so bright white on 800 even with the sensitive turned down. 455 is easier to see. But on my 1197 with 6.310 800 looks pretty good. But I would not say it is any better that the 455.

If you are interested in the 800Khz at all on the 1199 I would call customer service about getting the 800Khz fixed.

Chuck what do you think of the pictures? Why is the picture of the crappie on the bluff so blurry, and the tree pics are so hard to see.most of these trees are bigger than my boat. Everything looks so far away. Thanks

Good pictures. Displays for depths below 50 feet are always somewhat questionable. Which is why most users interested in these depths use some form of homemade towfish. Also 800 for HB is not really a good display. I really think these HB units are best at 25 feet and 455. You are not seeing anything different than most for your depths. These units record Raw data, so using a playback viewer such as Humviewer, you can adjust contrast and brightness much better than the unit settings. And much better on the larger computer screen. Although this is after the fact. You can set the bottom view to help match the depths for a somewhat better detail, although I have never had a lot of success at deep depths...

I did not turn around and go over the top of these fish to see how deep they were but more than likely they were 15 to 20 feet suspended. I fish this area often and have caught hundreds.I just wish I could get sharper images! Everything I see is blurry besides rocks or bridges, they look great.Any suggestions Anybody thanks.

It is possible your 1197 transducer has degraded over time. Since you have 2 other units, you can easily cross test it with one of the other transducers.
The 6.310 software should be your best bet for the 1197. Since you are beyond 6.57 on the 99 series units, the best image for them would be with the latest update......I can't guarantee you will not have comm problems to the 1197 after upgrading the 99's.
If that happens, you would be forced to upgrade the 1197 as well.
To improve clarity you can reduced range, make sure you don't have turbulent water across the transducer....maybe try lowering it a bit, make sure nothing is blocking the transducer to the sides, make sure the transducer is clean, adjust contrast and sensitivity, use 800 KHZ. Water conditions can also affect clarity of the image.
It is also possible you have an unreasonable expectation of clarity. The sonar return from a fish is primarily from it's air bladder.......The fish return are not going to be crystal clear. These are not $100K commercial units.

Bob- Do you think it would be unreasonable for me to expect to see these. I have two of these side by side 15 feet deep. If I had not saw them on my aquaview I would say they were gone. If I can't see these what else am I missing.

Bob- I have tried everything. Long story I made a bracket with a new transducer that I could lower about two feet below the boat, nothing blocking the view. Also the new transducer wire was laying on top of carpet, the power wire I had laying on top of carpet on the other side of boat hooked to a jump box ruling out interference, two different units nothing helped. my boat idles at 3 to 3.5 ,When I go again I am going to idle my motor down and keep it running with hot foot to see if a longer look is better.I know everybody's boat idles same as mine.I'm running out of options.Maybe I am asking for to much ,I just see these amazing pictures other people have and wish mine were the same. The pics I see might be doctored with humviewer ,I don't know anything about it. Thanks

I just don't understand how you got so invested in 3 generations of Humminbird equipment if you aren't happy with the performance.
You should be able to get as good of SI and DI performance from your new units that you originally got with the 1197 you were happy with. If you are in Alabama, maybe you can talk to HB customer service about the possibility of bringing your boat to have the installation checked out.
Since you have 4 11xx unit and a 360, you should be a valued customer to them.
Or maybe you can find some prostaff in the area that you might be able to get with 1 on 1.

Try shallower depths like 20 feet or in that general area. Try the 455 frequency. Try scanning less distance side to side. Those pieces of wood at the depths you are scanning will not show very well... These types of sonar are in the low end of production. to get depth detail takes towfish. Or you can spend over $75,000 and get a better unit which by the way will use a towfish... Chuck

Chuck- The pieces of wood are only 15 feet,I thought they should have big shadows and be easy to see but they are very hard to find.

Try Amber1 and reduce the sensitivity, up contrast a little.
Your 800 KHz is defective from the factory.
Call HB next week and ask for Deborah in C/S, then explain your situation and how the 800KHz blows out.

You should see the wood at 15 feet. Are you running 455 at the shallow depths? You might have an issue with the transducer as it looks kinda of a light display. .......Chuck

Yes I am running 455. I have tried another transducer, same thing.I can go buy one of my stumps or treetops I fish and if there is a school of crappie it looks like a salty cloud. Then I can put down trolling motor with 360 and it shows very good picture of fish, but I got to get right on top of them. I can't see hardly anything 15 feet away with 360. I'm not complaining about humminbird stuff just trying to get better images.

I agree with you. Try another recording run and snapshot or humviewer picture of the wood or where you think they should be. If you can get a recording PM me and I would like a copy of the recording to look at here.
