Are there any pics of thermocline and how you adjust to see it on the 1198 anywhere ?

No pictures but you should try setting the SwitchFire menu to the Max setting and turn up the Sensitivity.  Depending on how sharp the temperature change is and how deep it is will depend on how well it will show on the 2D sonar.
