Spent all evening on the lake in the boat playing with the 998. I have a few questions. First it worked great but I noticed it gave a cleaner reading between 3-6 mph , anything less it seemed to give a wavy reading. Is it normal or does my transducer need moving and I would also have to trim the motor up a bit to get a clean left side reading. Other than that the only other weird thing was that as we were going back to the dock I noticed something that looked like smoke that filled the water column on the right side and di views... Weird.... And my last question is that I noticed on several occasions that I saw what looked.like little fingerprints , was that a bait ball of minnows or something?? And no it wasn't my fingerprints..lol

When you slow the boat down try also slowing down the Chart Speed menu setting.

The smoke may have been the air bubble trail left by your or another boat that passed by to the right.

Yes those fingerprints sound like bait balls.

Thanks... I bet your right because a mastercraft loaded down throwing a huge wake was passing back and forth within 60-80 yards and may have actually came through the path I was taking seconds earlier!! So is it normal to have to trim the motor on some boats?? Otherwise it seemed to work flawlessly. My problem is, I just want to ride around and look for stuff with the 998!! So if I see these bait balls and no apparent predator fish, does that mean there are no bass, crappy or cats around?? Or will it not always be so obvious?? Thanks for the replies, I'm gonnareally get some use out of this site!!

I have to trim my motor up just a little when using the SI looking for structure, no big deal hit the trim button up for 2 seconds and it clears up. I use SI to spot bait (saltwater) all the time, really helps to load the well quick. I cant really comment on fresh water and seeing fish, saltwater is a little different, BUT, I have spotted grouper holding on a ledge or rock pile.

I seem to be having a problem with my unit when i try to mark a waypoint on the si screen it freezes and i have to power down. I'm also not seeing the hb contour maps....any suggestions

Haven't had time to check, but I'm hoping the reason for freezing is a slow writing SD card. With screen cap on I'm thinking It's taking a long time to.write?

That could be the freezing up problem but we won’t know until you use a different SD memory card. It could also be the memory card itself and not that it is not a fast enough read/write speed on the memory card.

When you are trying to view ContourXD maps; do you have a map card in the unit?
Are you sure that the lake you are viewing is one of the lakes that are included with this map package?
Which lake is this you are trying to see?

Are you saying that: with no additional mapping card installed in your 998c Si unit, that it is showing no mapping data at all – that the display is just showing as all white?

If this is so, please call the Humminbird Customer Resource folks at 1-800-633-1468 as I believe they have something that will help.

I don't have any other lake maps. I was just under the impression it came related.with the basic hb contour maps? Am I wrong? Let me check it out inthe morning and I will post and maybe take a video on my.cell or something.

Without an SD card unit will freeze while marking a waypoint or trying to get a snapshot. As soon as i turn snapshot on it will freeze even when trying to mark a waypoint. It only freezes when I have snapshot enabled

Fan2104 Waypoints, tracks ,routes are independant of recordings an snapshots.I suggest
you put a sd card in see what happens you need one anyway while using snapshots.Unit should not be freezing while marking a waypoint.Check all your connections and power source if it continues call HB support. Gary

All my connections are fine, but as soon as I turn snap shot on and push the mark button, it freezes. Here is a pic of my navigation. Maybe its.supposed to be like this?

Fan 2104 you have nothing there to take a snapshot of. You do not have a map card in.
hit view go to SI on simulation screen put a sd card in then hit snapshot you will get a image.

Well I was sure it came with the humminbird contour xd maps. Are they pre loaded or on a SD card somewhere?? Cause if they are on a SD then it didn't come with it. And as far as snapshot, I go to si in simulation and turn the snapshot on and when i push the mark button it freezes there...

Just bought and 8gb extreme that has a 45mb write speed. Same thing, with screen capture on if I use the cursor and try to save a waypoint as soon as I hit the mark button it freezes... Any suggestions?? Thinking it will have to go in to hb

I still think that you should call Humminbird and see if they have a solution to the ‘no map’ issue. Once that is fixed the snapshot issue may get fixed along with it. 1-800-633-1468

I’ll bet that it doesn’t. If I am right about what is wrong with his 998c unit than the CRC folks have a fix for this that they can send him.

Exactly right Greg. It doesn't ever load. I tried calling Friday I was too late. Will call today. Just tell them my unit won't complete the loading charts?

You wasnt kidding!!! I waited for 17 min then in less than 5 min they had my name,number and problem solved (hopefully) on its way through the email in the form of an update!! Its been an hour and havent gotten anything yet but when i do, if it fixes anything i will let yall know! OH yeah she mentioned it should take care of freezing issue

Glad you got in ntouch with the service folks. It looked as if the chart was not loading. Which is why I asked....
Glad they knew of the problem and of a fix. Let us all know of what they send you...
