Queston about autochart live and autochart pro
« on: March 29, 2015, 01:16:05 PM »
I was reading about a hummingbird product called autochart live that allows you to map a lake while you are on the water. Apparently there is a software update for the Onix units that installs it on the unit. My question is do they have a version of this for an 898SI unit even if I have to pay for it? If they do, I would rather purchase that than the autochart pro product. However, if it isn't available for my unit at all, I am interested in the autochart pro. But before I plop down 250 bucks where can I find a list of the lakes on the zero line map card so I can be sure that my local lake is on there?

If it isn't there you can create it yourself ..... I don't think there is a list since there are so many.

I assume you are answering the question about the autochart pro product. If I am not mistaken, the shore line outline of the lake has to be on the SD card already or you cant create a map. My lake is on the lakemaster card so I assume it's on this one too, but as I said, 250 bucks is a lot to waste to find out its not there.

AutoChart Live is only on the ONIX units, so you will have to go with AutoChart or AutoChart Pro.

Bob B is right; I don’t know of a list for all the lakes on the ZeroLines map card.  If yours is not there you can still make a map and even draw an outline for your lake.  I, like you, assume that if a lake is on one of the LakeMaster mapping cards that it would also be on the ZeroLines map card as well but I cannot guarantee it.  What lake is this and where is it located?

If the zerolines sd card doesn't happen to have your lake already outlined, you can create your own shoreline.  Though, I'm betting it is there.  There are literally millions of lakes from tiny ponds to huge lakes outlined.

Here is the tutorial of how to do create a custom shoreline:

Thanks to everyone for your input. Now that I see that I can create a lake shoreline if my lake isn't included in the autochart program, I'm willing to buy it, although I'm pretty sure it's included. It's a 65,000 acre lake. I have one final question. I'm not a pro fisherman but I saw that the autochart pro version can actually show bottom density and it also does something else that slips my mind at the moment. Does anyone has experience with both autochart and autochart pro, and is the pro version worth the extra 50 bucks?

Pro version adds the features of 'Bottom Hardness Overlay" and "Side Imaging Mosaic".

It depends on your use.  I haven't found myself using either of those features very much.  There are a couple of downfalls of their use.
Side imaging mosaic, you need to be somewhat deliberate with your data collection if you know you are going to want to view the side imaging mosaic.  In other words, make pretty straight runs without a lot of turning.

Bottom hardness: This is collected from the sonar return of the bottom, which gets affected whether you're driving your boat at slow speeds, or up on plane.  So, again you need to be somewhat deliberate or consistent with data collection if you'll want meaningful data for this layer as well.

Still, I bough the pro version, just because at that price point, what is an extra $50?  And I do find myself starting to use the side imaging mosaic more, now that I've gotten more comfortable using the program.

Camo Hunter, I ordered the autochart product but it is going to take a week to arrive. I was thinking of recording sonar data on a blank sd card in the meantime and then transferring it to the zero line map card later. Is that the way it works or do I have to record the sonar data directly to the zero line card? Also, when you are charting an area, do you find one boat pattern that works better than the others? I was going to run north to south and then intersect those same lines going east to west to create a grid pattern.

Definitely record your trips on the water and save it all.  When ever you get your Auto chart card you can run the program on your computer and load all of your saved data and make your map and put it on the card.  I had Dr Depth prior to auto chart and was able to load previous saved data into that program and then load all of my previous data into Auto Chart.  I always recommend that if a person has capabilities to record and save their data they should even tho they don't see themselves getting a mapping program at this time because when they do get a mapping program they will already have a great deal of data to play with. :) :) :)

I wouldn't want to record sonar data to the ZeroLines map card anyways.  I would only use it for my finished maps - but that's just me.  Any sonar recording will work, so just go ahead and record away now!

Yep.  What they said.

I only use blank sd cards for making sonar recordings.  I only use the zerolines sd card for my maps that AutoChart spits out on in the computer program.

You're also wise, to make somewhat smaller sonar recordings.  So, instead of making a 3hr long sonar recording, make three 1 hours recordings.  That way, if something were to happen like a loss of power or something, you don't lose it all, just a smaller portion.

Go ahead and start saving data now.

I have a further question on auto chart live as I am looking at a Onix. Can maps created on live be  recorded to a zero lines card and used in a non Onix unit?

I would say yes.  I haven't tried it, or know anyone that has, but here's my take on it.

When you create a map in AutoChart Pro, it puts that custom map into a folder (AC) onto the ZeroLines SD card.  That map can be read in all units that are compatible with AutoChart.  I'm assuming/guessing, that if you're writing a map to a ZeroLines SD card with your Onix, it is doing the same thing (creating the map in an AC folder on the SD card).

CamoHunter, its that last part that i am not sure about.  I don;t know that it will write all the same data to a Zero Lines map card.

Yeah, I'm not sure. I would think so, but who knows.

I think Humminbird should loan me an Onix so we can find out!  ;)

Or vice versa. When I upgrade to an Onix I'd like to think all my hard work and previous Autochart maps will be able to be uploaded to the Onix. If not, that will be a SERIOUS issue and maybe time to change brands.

Thats the issue im trying to figure out now. I run auto chart live right now on my 998 with a tablet pc. When i convert my data using auto chart and write it to my zero lines card it saves it as a .bin file. Now my buddy runs a onix unit and we were going to transfer his auto chart live data that he has on his zero lines card to my zero lines card. But we found that his saves it in a .acu format and my 998 dosent reconize it. If anyone knows a way around this please let us know.
