Connector compatibility between 1197c si and 1199ci HD models
« on: February 10, 2014, 07:20:54 AM »
I guess this question is for Greg:
I currently have an 1197c si.
I have no use for the ethernet or interlink on the 1199.

If I bought an 1199, could I just use the same gang plug connections and bracket that I used for the 1197?  Can I just unplug the 1197 and plug in the 1199, using the same wires/cables/connectors/bracket?

Thanks in advance.

No you cannot ITG.  The connector collector for the 1199 is different than for the 1197.  This was to done to incorporate the Ethernet connection cable connector into the connector collector.

Hello,
Anybody out there?

Sorry ITG, I've got a new Engineer in training classes all this week so am having to try and answer e-mail and posts around that.

So if you're training an engineer....

Does that make you a "Super engineer"...??

:) :) :)

(Sorry ITGEEK...had to pick on Greg a minute)...

No, I’m not that smart.  :o
They just let me do the easy stuff like safety, product handling, soldering and a little sonar.
At least one fishes!  ;D

Dear Greg,

How are you?
Rather Long ago we did correspond with you.

Our gouvernement uses the 1197 and 1198 for semi professional use.
Locate drownings, car wrecks etc.
We too as Surveyors, mostly for shallow water and structure inspection or locating objects.

We all consider if we are better off using the 1199 in stead of 1197 and 1198

The processor is said to be faster but is this noticeable ?
The devices are solely used as Side-Scan Sonar
Sometimes combined with navigation.
The data is stored and post-processed in SonarWiz.MAP software.
So the real-time part is for us considered as Raw data.

We wonder if the 1199 data output to SD card, is exactly the same as 1197 and 1198?
If not, SonarWiz.MAP software will not recognize the data and then we are stuck???

What about the Radar Dome?
Does it fit the 1199 and do we need conversion cables or connectors?

Last question:
When we would use the HB GPS with heading sensor, will it use the Earth Magnetic Field or is it a mini gyro or so?
We all guess it works with the Earth Magnetic Field, but if so, can it be calibrated on a steel vessel?
We know from experience that Magnetic Heading sensors or Compasses do not work close to a steel ship or wreck (ROV or AUV mounted for example?)

Kindest regards,

Surveyor

Hey Greg,
What about the mounting bracket only.
Is it the same between the 1197 and 1199?

Greg, could you be so kind as to send this info to me also.  I would appreciated it as I do have some of the same questions.  This is my first post so I hope I have it correct.  Thank you

Welcome to the Humminbird Side Imaging Forums deurdarr.
Yes, you got your post right.  Let me see if I can remember what all I sent surveyor…

Not sure you will notice any difference between the 1198 and 199 units unless you are using a very large mapping card along with it.  Physics will not let us speed up the sonar part of things.  There should be a notable difference between the 1197 and 1199 units though.

I have no idea about the SonarWiz.MAP software.  If the 1197 and 1198 units worked with it than the 1199 should as well but I have no way to verify that.

The Radars use an Ethernet connection so you would need the AS-EC-QDE adapter to make the connection.  If you will have more than one device Ethernet connected to the 1199 unit you would also need one of the 5 Port Ethernet Switches (AS-ETH-5PXG).

The AS-GPS-HS uses a magnetic sensor and so may not work well on a steel vessel.

Thank you for the quick reply.  This forum has a lot of knowledge and is impressive.  I do have other questions for the experts.

I currently run a 798CI HD SI COMBO on the bow and an 1197c SI Combo on the dash.  I do have these networked together with a Humminbird 5-Port Ethernet Switch (AS ETH 5PXG) to connect the 798, 1197 and I-Pilot link (the 1197 has the Lake Master card) to share things.  Also running two Cannon Digi Troll 10 Downrigger hooked in the birds with the Cannon Link system.  All works great but I have questions on when/why/what to upgrade.  I only post this to better understand my situation and questions.

If I currently have the 1197, is there any improvement to the SI/DI technology to an 1198, 1199 or the ONIX series?  Has the SI/DI improved (quality of picture/technology) a lot after the 1197 to the new series of HB’s (1198, 1199 or ONIX)?

If I upgrade to the ONIX Series will I lose all my Ethernet linking capabilities I currently have?

Upgrading to an 1199 – I will still be able to have Ethernet connection (talking to the 798 and 1197) with the Ethernet adapter, correct?

Comparing the 1199 to the ONIX, is the touch feature the only difference as far as horsepower with the side imaging?

Do you know if the Cannon Downriggers (with the new Digi-Troll series) are starting to go on their own and getting away from integrating with the HB units?

Since my eyes are not like they used to be, I am thinking about putting a new 1198, 1199 or ONIX beside by my 1197 on the dash and trying to see what my best options are.  I want to run one for SI/DI and the other for GPS mapping.  I am trying to research the right stuff so my future upgrades are in line to what I am buying.

Thanks so much for any info!

Guess I should have split surveyor’s post off from the main topic as we are now way off-topic.

I can’t say about the sonar in the ONIX series units as I have not been out on a boat with one yet.  I do know that they have a dedicated DI piezo element, so the DI sonar is improved.  From the 1197 to the 1198 and 199 units there should not be any sonar changes that were not also made in the 1197 through software.  Differences would be in the processor power/speed which can be different depending on what you have connected or are using in (mapping cards) the unit.  The newer units will be able to use accessories that the 1197 will not be able to use.  The larger mapping cards will work better in the newer units as well.

Upgrading to an 1199 should still allow you to Ethernet connect to the 798 and 1197 if the software version allows.  Some software versions will not communicate with an older software version [Example: “Humminbird Software Update 6.640 and 6.680 for Ethernet Models:
2.These software updates draw a line in the sand.  Once a user updates one or more of their units to software version 6.640 or 6.680 they must update all of the other Ethernet networked units to the same release.   If they try to use one unit with software version 6.680 and another unit on the same network that might be at 6.610 or lower these models will no longer talk to each other until the unit that is at 6.610 or lower has been updated to the newest release of 6.640 or 6.680.   If the units are not networked, this issue is irrelevant.  But we always recommend that the user update with the latest code.”]

The ONIX will not network with the 1197, 1198 or 1199 units.

I don’t know about the Cannon downriggers.  I don’t think that they will work with any of the current 2014 (XX9) units including ONIX.

I have seen rumors that HB is working hard to be able to share waypoints between the ONIX and the 98/99 series units.....Right now it can't.
My understanding is they do not plant to try to share transducers or GPS, etc
They are also recommending the new Ethernet switch for the ONIX.

Not so sure that should be just a “recommend” there Bob B.  The ONIX needs to be able to communicate more information and so will have to use the faster Ethernet Switch (AS-ETH-5PXG).  It is my understanding that the Ethernet capable 700/800/900/1100 series units can use the newer switch but not the other way around with the ONIX units.

Thanks for the clarification Greg.....For a while there was some mixed info being put out.

I saw one guy who was able to use the ONIX with the old switch, but was getting some problems with 360 that were probably caused by the old switch.

You are probably right on that Bob B.  Think about it as being on a dial-up Internet connection but needing a high-speed connection to play a video.  The communication just won’t be fast enough so things are not going to work or work correctly.  Now add a few more units to that same system and start sharing more sonar and mapping too!
