Title: Is the 798c capable of Down Imaging?
Post by: YankeeDoodler on March 28, 2010, 06:55:48 PM
Newbie here.  I was trying to find information on whether the 798c SI model is capable of DI.  From this thread I am guessing it is with updated software.  I am positioning myself to buy an SI model and was leaning towads the 898 model becasue of the DI function, but have a 727 on the bow and was thinking that I could interlink the 798 and 727.  Will the external GPS antenna that comes with the 798c enable the GPS capabilites of the 727?  Any of this making any sense

YankeeDoodler,

Welcome to the forum.  I split your topic off since it diverged from the other post and you had some other questions.

Yes the 798c is capable of DI.  The 4.780 software update added this feature.

Yes you can Interlink the 727 and 798 and will be able to share the NMEA data between the two units.

Good Luck and welcome to the forum.

Robert

While the 798cSI is capable of down imaging, my experience with this feature has not been good. I installed the unit about 6 months ago and after many hours on the water trying every combination of settings imaginable, I simply can't "see" anything at all on the DI screen. The bottom contour matches the sonar screen, but above the bottom is simply blank. Even simulator mode gets the same results.
The SI feature is marginally better, but I find myself using the old 2D sonar after getting frustrated with these features.

The transducer is mounted on the jackplate with Transducer Shield and Saver hardware and the unit's software was upgraded.

Suggestions appreciated.

Gary

The only view I have the DI showing in is the 3-way split screen to compare the image with the 2D ...

I have my DI sensitivity turned all the way up to 20...abd brush still doesn't show up that well...

You have to remember that brush is 90%water soaked so sonar doesn't bounce off of it very well....

I see a lot of DI pictures posted that show amazing detal of brush, structures and even fish. I get absolutely nothing on my DI screen but bottom contour.

Plan to go fishing tomorrow and will try to remember to capture a couple of screens.
Just picture a bottom contour with the entire water column nothing but black.

You are right rv.  I have my sensetivity set @ 15 and I have no problem showing fish or structure, but the more "solid" the structure the clearer the view for sure.
