Title: I need some help/advice.
Post by: muskie dan on February 05, 2017, 12:03:10 PM
Hi there.  Been a long time since I was here.

I need some advice from some of you experts out there...any help is much appreciated.

Its time to upgrade my birds on my boat.  My old 798 si is tired and has enough miles on it to go half way around the world...at an average of 3.3mph lol.
I have a few questions so I'll get right to it.

1- Looking at buying one Helix 10 SI CHIRP....or.....2 Helix 7's to use side by side. Roughly the same price.  Any thoughts on this?

2- If I go with the two helix 7's...do they both need to be SI units to use SI on both?  Or can one be downloaded or uploaded or whatever?

I'll definitely have more questions I'm sure.  Thanks for any input and thoughts...cheers!

If you decide to go with the 7's, you will want to go with the G2N so you can network them to be able to share the transducer and waypoints.
By buying 2, you will get more overall screen real estate  ....One could be dedicated to mapping.  One  drawback I can think of is that if you want to view full screen SI you will not have as much screen to view it on ...... of course you could share 1 transducer and view the left SI on one unit and the right SI on the other unit and actually have more viewing size.

The biggest drawbacks are that you won't get 800 Khz or Mega or a dedicated DI element with the 7.  Those are the things that would drive me to the 9 or 10.  I would definitely want a model that has the Mega and transducer with the dedicated DI element.

Thanks Bob!

So if I network the 2 helix 7 Gen2 units, and use one transducer, do both units need to be SI to be able to use SI on both?  or, just require one unit to be SI able and the other just a sonar/nav unit or perhaps just a DI unit?

you make a great point on the mega situation in regards to the helix 9 or 10 or 12 units .  its definitely something I'm interested in.

Only 1 unit need to be SI and the SI transducer connected to it can be shared to the other unit.

The dedicated DI element in the new units is actually more important to me than the mega ..... even though the mega images I have seen are amazing....The DI is also greatly improved.

Thanks for the help, as I am in the market to up grade my console 798si. Was really looking hard at a helix 10. Put it on the bow, move my 898 to the console.

If I were upgrading, I would REALLY want one of the Gen2 Mega units at the console.....You could put a Gen 2 Mega 10 at the console and move the 798 too the bow with the 898 ..... dedicate the 798 to mapping.

I agree with Bob that Mega in at least 1 unit would expand the capabilities of the system greatly ...
