Title: what fish finder do you recommend
Post by: NovaSS on October 22, 2015, 07:03:37 PM
Im looking to upgrade my old lcr4000 on my 15' hydrosport bass boat. i know its old but its always told me how deep the water is even on plane. it never showed 1 fish. It has a shoot threw transducer. on my other boat its aluminum boat i have a 300tx w/ transom mounted transducer. I hated the 300tx because no matter where i put it on the back. it always stopped reading as soon as to get about 1 or 2 mph. i also tried other trans mount transducers.

So i guess what im saying is i want a to have side imaging and still be able to see how deep the water is while on plane. Ive been thinking about the helix 5 and also the 7. Its just $200 more for the 7 over the 5, from what i read thats a lot of money for just 2" of screen.

I also read the helix 9 is going to be hard to beat for under $1000. it is suppose to have a lot more options added over the 5 & 7. im still not sure i want to go that high for a depth finder on 1985 bass boat. I do want to upgrade to a nice 20-22' key west or make. but im just dreaming right now about a new boat.

Ill be using this boat in deer point lake, bay county, florida. For being a very popular lake here in florida i cant find any maps for it. but ill be fishing the bay in summer a lot. so i guess ill be using it 75% of the time in saltwater bay and the other 25% lake fishing.

Just some general guidance. Don't use the age of your boat as a basis on the unit you buy. Look at it as a tool to solve a problem ( how deep, what's down there, what's out there, etc.).
I have a 1982 16' aluminum with two 1199's and a 998 on board. The electronics cost three times more than I paid for the boat.

From what you have now to what's available today; the advancements are amazing. I made a similar jump. Try to get on the water with someone that has a unit like you are considering.
I suspect that you will find that the 2" larger screen is a bigger deal than you think. Good luck.

There's a LOT of chatter on other forums right now since Humminbird is starting to get the info for the Helix 9,10,and 12 on their web page.

The word is Nov, Dec, and Jan ..... Looks like the 12 is the one lagging a little behing right now.
