I read a lot about mounting the XHS 9 HDSI 180 T traducer above the at-speed plane line and mounting an additional shoot-thru transducer for at-speed readings.  The transducer has sonar capabilities so why not just mount it where it can be used for at-speed sonar and low-speed imaging?

2 main reasons. To protect the expensive HDSI transducer and get better high speed readings. The large transducer is hard to get adjusted for 40 plus mph. I have done it with mine and it works up to 50 mph. I have an aluminum boat so I could not use an in hull. Bob

I'm having trouble with installing a shoot-through-hull transducer.  Very limited access to bilge area (unless you have monkey arms).  My cruising speed is 40mph or less.  My test location (board and C-clamp) worked at higher speed for depth.

It is entirely your choice if you use the stock XHS 9 HDSI 180 T for depth at high speed ...

Bob covered the possible reasons not to ... Expensive to replace the XHS 9 HDSI 180 T and difficulty in finding clean bubble free water coming off the back of the transom ...
