I've got a Humminbird 999 HD SI but the model is likely irrelevant. Ever since I got it last fall it would often lose contact with the transducer after shutting it off and later turning it on again. Usually a second restart would fix the problem. A few days ago it lost contact with the transducer continuously and switching it off didn't fix the problem. I took the unit (without tranducer) in for warranty but it checked out perfectly. I was told the problem was with the transducer or cable. When I got it home, without doing anything to it, it worked perfectly.
I'm now guessing it's a problem with the connector. Do these things get dirty or corrode? Is there a quick way to clean them on the water if this happens again? BTW, I've only used this unit 4 or 5 days and only in freshwater.

Are you using he connector collector? The transducer cable could be damaged from getting smashed or strained that will give you an intermittent connection. By the way, are you losing depth and bottom or just depth? Or what is the indication that lets you know there is a problem? Bob

The problem is that I get a "transducer not connected" message when I turn the unit on. This happened once during the first fishing trip I used it and increased with time. The last fishing trip (only about the fifth time I've had it out), the message came up every time I powered up. In other words I couldn't use it.

It must still be under warranty. Tell cs and have them send you another.

Yes, it's still under warranty. My issue is that after the unit was tested by our local warranty facility and found to be OK, when I reattached to the transducer on the boat at home...it worked perfectly. This is after never finding the transducer the day before on the water.
My guess is that somehow the contacts on the connector between transducer and unit are being compromised..ie corroded. Is there anything else that may have done this.
I'm perplexed.

It is intermittent. The next logical step is the transducer. Call them. Bob

Thanks Bob. I've contacted Customer Service and will see how they respond.

There have been many reports over the years about connection problems with the HB core unit cable connector ends ...
I don't like them either ...
Sometimes bending the pins slightly will create a better connection ...

Great idea...I'll try it. I've had an old 386 that I swap out between boat, kayak, float tube and ice fish setup with no problems. Then you spend a bunch of money for the latest and the problems start. I don't even want to go into my problems with the iPilot.

Customer Service has now sent me a form letter telling me to take it into a warranty center. Of course the warranty center says my unit is working. I'm really pissed off with Humminbird at this point.

Did you try bending the pins ...??
I've got a couple xducers with the same issue that I had to bends the pins way more than I wanted to ...

No, I haven't tried that yet...it'll be a last resort. I broke a pin on a 386 ci when it bent a little too far...these things are pretty brittle.
I'm now taking it back to the dealer who will uninstall the transducer and send the whole shebang to the warranty center. Hopefully they'll find something wrong with the transducer.
Thanks for the suggestion and help,
Harry

Got it back from the dealer after the warranty center replaced the transducer. Worked slick on the only time I've used it since. Now I wish I could say the same thing about my Minnkota iPilot but that's another story.
