Title: Is it possible to make the transducer cable shorter?
Post by: tmx on March 08, 2010, 03:43:50 PM
for example 0.5 to max. 1m lenght, without any significant negative effect on the side of the operating mode?

I dont see any reason you cant shorten the cable.  Remember that soldering the connections are the whole deal.   guys have in fact lengthened the cable for towfish operation. Just be very careful in the connecton of the wires again. Maybe have an electronics guy do the soldering.  Chuck

Chuck,
Jakob wants to get rid off the unnecessary cable to safe space / weight in the bait boat, remember?

Jakob,
reducing the cable length is not the problem, but getting the wires soldered AND shielded is the key to success here as Chuck already pointed out.  But looking on your website I guess that this is no biggie for you and your guys, right?

I just coil mine up behind the unit nice and neat and put a tie wrap on it!  ;)

Why risk messing something up!

It's for a small bait boat Robert, only about 2 feet long.
So ample space for cable

yes, that's right. it's not a big deal to short the cable the right way. i just wanted to know if there are maybe some requirements for the cable lenght refers to the transducer frequency..

I think the cable can be shortened.  if you were to lengthen then you might need to change the impedence.  as if in a tow fish.  I am starting on a 5 foot bait boat.  we need to stay in touch.   chuck

Last time I had checked on this guys I was told that shortening the cable could cause enough of an impedance mis-match that it could throw off the tuning of the unit.  We tune based on a 20 foot cable length.  I was also told that this is not as much of a factor when adding to the length of the cable… not sure why as you would be adding impedance which could still throw off the tuning.  I’ll have to catch one of the sonar engineers sometime and ask about this again but that could take weeks or months.

Greg,we ask about this last friday but in the other direction,  adding length for a tow fish.  the answer was that the impedence would change for the lengthening. I seem to recall (kinda of hazy) that shortening would not be a problem. another idscussion we had was for future transducers to have a stubby short cable with a connector near the transducer and then a person could determine the length of cable need for the particular.  This way   transducer to unit could hsve different lengths and impedence match for the length.  but that is a way off venture and not short term.  chuck
