Title: 1197 won't read depth
Post by: Kyktb on March 24, 2015, 02:18:41 AM
I put an 1197 on my boat & used a Y cable for the SI ducer & put a XP 9 20 ducer in the hull.
The unit has read depth a few times then it goes back to the default 1.9ft reading.
I installed the in hull ducer correctly. I've checked the connection between the ducer & the Y cable. SI ducer shows bottom contour & cover correctly. I reset unit back to default settings but that was no help either. I'm wondering if I've got a bad Y cable or in hull ducer. Frustrated by not getting depth. I hate to buy a new Y cable & ducer trying to trouble shoot this but I'm out of options. Any suggestions?

I've also unplugged & re plugged the ducer into the Y cable to make sure it is snapped into place correctly.

Welcome to the Humminbird Side imaging Forums Kyktb.

When you say that you correctly installed the in hull transducer correctly, did this include on the water testing of the installation location before you epoxied it in place?
When you epoxied the transducer, what was the temperature?

Try some testing and let us know the results:
Step 1: Unplug the AS-Si-DB-Y cable and transducers from each other.
Step 2: Plug the HDSi transducer straight into your 1197 unit and see if it starts reading the correct depth reading or not at idles speed (at higher speeds you may start to get air under the HDSi transducer).  If the unit is still showing incorrect depth readings than the problem is most likely in the unit or the power to the unit.  If this is the case post back this fact and we will troubleshoot in a different direction…
Step 3: Assuming (uh-oh!) that the HDSi transducer gave correct water depth readings; plug the XP-9-20 transducer straight into your 1197 unit and see if the 1.9 foot depth readings comes back or not.  If they do, than the problem is with the transducer or the installation of the transducer.  It could also be a result of the separation of the fiberglass layers of your boat but that is very rare.

I unplugged & re plugged the in hull ducer again this morning. Unit read right for about 5 minutes then back to the default 1.6ft reading again. WTH????
If I'm in water 10ft or less it will show the bottom on the sonar screen but will not read depth. Obviously the in hill ducer reads right but I think it's either a problem with the Y cable or the unit itself. Gonna do more testing.

Plug the XHS 9 HDSI 180 T into the Dual Beam leg of the AS SIDB Y cable ...(Leave the Side Image leg of the AS SIDB Y cable unconnected) ...

If the unit does not read the 2d from the HDSI ...then the AS SIDB Y cable is bad ...

If the unit does read 2d from the HDSI ...then the AS SIDB Y cable is working and the issue is with the in hull xducer or its installation ...

Mine does the same thing. New transducers, Y cables, back to Humminbird twice. It worked great for a year and a half. POS

I took my in hull transducer out, cleaned it & epoxied it back in. Works perfect now. Love it!
