Title: 596c HD DI Dual Beam Question
Post by: sblatt on February 26, 2015, 08:26:51 PM
So I have a 596c HD DI at the bow of my boat on my trolling motor. I just realized that my transducer only has a 200 kHz beam which is extremely small coverage. I really enjoy drop shotting and locating fish, but am finding it difficult only being able to see 1/3 of the depth I'm in. I could turn on switch fire max for drop shotting, but I'm still only getting a small cone area. Is there a different transducer I could possibly buy to get both 200 KHz and 83 KHz? Or am I missing something in the menu? I have a 997c Si at the console and I feel a little more confident being able to have 200 KHz/ 83 Khz which provides better coverage with the 83 KHz.

So I found another post on this site that said with this model bird, the only way
to use both the 200khz/83khz is to turn on fish id. Is this correct?

sblatt,
You have the 596c HD DI model unit, which does not have the 83kHz capability built into it.  I think that you are a little confused on what sonar your unit has.  What your unit does have is a 28 degree 200kHz beam and a 16 degree 455kHz beam for its 2D sonar (see attached image).

Oh ok. So with the 455khz I'll get better detail but of a small overall area?

Another question is when I'm in simulator mode, and I'm on the 2d screen, I can't select to change to 455khz. The screen just goes black, until I switch back to 200khz

Yes.

This is because there is no simulated 455kHz 2D data within the unit.  It saves memory space and keeps costs down because we don't have to buy a larger memory chip for this.
