I recently ordered a new Onix unit(delivery delayed until March). I have move my 1197SI to the trolling motor. Any tips to shorten learning curve for use on TM? Chart speed? I fish vertically a good bit, so the down imaging will help.

Keep the chart speed about the same as boat speed ...
Try not to make abrupt changes in TM direction ... As this can cause skewing of the SI image ...

With SI on the trolling motor you will get the best images by trolling as straight as possible......but you can get good information even if steering......you just have to get past the need for pretty pictures......You can even sit still and scan by turning the trolling motor with the motor off.

I'm fixing to confuse things here.rickie is correct about boat speed and chart speed, but he's also wrong.i never run chart speed as slow as what my trolling motor speed would be, on the core units).Come to think of it, I don't do that with my out board either. For me, it's just a waste of time, waiting for the screen to update.i always run chart speed as fast as I can get by with.which is always faster than my boat speed.(you'll like the onix) I chose to use my onix on the trolling motor and keep a 998 at the console.either way would be good choice. Just what fits your needs most.Oh, also, did I say you'll like the onix? I think I did.....you will.....

All of these shots are from my onix , with transducer mounted on the trolling motor and I'm running the trolling also.As long as you don't make real quick movements and long movement , from side to side , the image won't skew to bad.....These are with scroll speed set to default or some maybe scroll speed at 4.....(http://i826.photobucket.com/albums/zz187/kosmo012/Mobile%20Uploads/snp0616141718_zpskckpuljl.jpg)[/URL(http://i826.photobucket.com/albums/zz187/kosmo012/Mobile%20Uploads/snp0616142217_zpsds0nyuzy.jpg)[/URL(http://i826.photobucket.com/albums/zz187/kosmo012/Mobile%20Uploads/snp0404143234_zpsreya5ebg.jpg)[/URL(http://i826.photobucket.com/albums/zz187/kosmo012/Mobile%20Uploads/snp0404143457_zpsqzowbjnt.jpg)[/URL(http://i826.photobucket.com/albums/zz187/kosmo012/Mobile%20Uploads/snp0404142957_zpsgu27tdnt.jpg)[/URL(http://i826.photobucket.com/albums/zz187/kosmo012/Mobile%20Uploads/snp0404142810_zps17vsvg9y.jpg) (http://s826.photobucket.com/user/kosmo012/media/Mobile%20Uploads/snp0616141718_zpskckpuljl.jpg.html)

kosmo makes a good point about Chart Speed ...
There's a balance in how quickly the unit is collecting data vs how often the unit is displaying that data ...
The common sentiment about "Chart Speed = Boat Speed" is just Ballpark relative (to that ratio) to get "in perspective" images ...and this Ballpark relative ratio may even be different across software versions ...
Faster chart speed is basically stretching the echoes across more sonar history ... Which, in the case of fish echoes ... Makes them easier to see and pick out on the SI image ... (A longer elongated fish echo is easier to see than a white dot echo)...
Faster chart speed is not making the unit ping any faster ... It's just "painting" the same echo data into repetitive pixels as the screen scrolls ...
