Just picked up one today. I have a Helix SI mounted on the dash and going to put the DI up front and transducer on trolling motor.  Let us know how yours works out.

Welcome to the Humminbird Side Imaging Forums sniper and PAPA BEAR.
Be sure to be the first to post some screen snapshots from your HELIX 5 units!

That cursor needs a crappie stakebed under it on that underwater hump ...

Lots of good info here.  Best thing is to go out and adjust your settings. Spend time on the water seeing what different settings do. I have had to use different settings at the same location from one day to the next.  There are some good videos on SI settings on you tube.

Papa Bear is right.
Really there are no best settings for any condition/water depth as there are so many variables involved.  In shallow water, depending on what I am looking for, I would throw out the generalized SI Range set to 2X to 3X settings and go with a much wider setting.  I've used 100+ feet when in only 3 feet of water.  That was with a 998 unit though, so you may have to pull that in with smaller display of the HELIX 5 SI-GPS units.

Greg,
Why such a wide range in shallow water?  Going down to Reelfoot lake next week to crappie fish, and have only used my Helix 5 SI a couple of times.  Would be curious to know about the shallow waster due to that lake being shallow for the most part.  Thanks

thanks guys

yeah realise need to adjust in different conditions
In regards to SD micro I put mine in but wasn't saving waypoints , taking snapshots
any ideas ...

Under the Sonar tab ...:

*Beam frequency to 83kHz/200kHz to take advantage of the added detail of the 20° 200kHz cone and the wider 60° coverage of the 83kHz cone ...
*Switchfire Clear for water shallower than 10ft and adjust Sensitivity up to an acceptable amount of screen clutter ...
*Switchfire Max for water deeper than 10ft and adjust Sensitivity down to an acceptable amount of screen clutter ...
*Fish ID =On ... You will grow to like this over time ...
*Surface Clutter =as high a number as you can stand the upper clutter on the screen ... Lower numbers filter out good echoes too ...
*Noise Filter = Off ... Unless there are noticeable interference lines on the screen ...
*Max Depth to 10ft below actual water depth for best ping performance ...

SI Range to less than 50ft until your eyes are trained to pick up things farther away ...

Under the SI Enhance menu ...:
*SI Sensitivity = adjust up to brighten/down to darken ...
*SI Contrast = 10-12 ... Higher to make harder structure stand out more (also makes image grainy) ...
*SI Sharpness = Off ... Higher to make fish echoes pop out (also makes image grainy) ...

Chart speed ...:
*Higher when viewing 2d for faster screen refresh ...
*Match boat speed when viewing SI for best perspective ratio of structure actual shape ...

Dean

Waypoints are saved directly into the unit memory ...

Go into the waypoint management menu under the Nav tab to see your waypoint library ...

Waypoints must be manually exported to the SD Card under the Nav tab/waypoints menu ...

Screen Snapshots are saved directly to the MicroSD card.

Wider range = more coverage area.  Again, this was with a unit that has a much larger display.  It will also depend on the size of the structures you are looking for and what they are made of.  For smaller structure and those that reflect less sonar I would use a much shorter setting.
