Hello all!
I am currently working on my masters thesis using an 1198c unit. I am trying to get raw ping intensity data from the recordings and haven't had much luck. I have SonarTRX and other programs to process files if that helps. Does anyone have any experience trying to do this?
thanks,
Mike

The recorded sonar data should be raw data. The data sentences should be unaffected by display settings....Chuck

Thanks Chuck. I sure hope it saves the raw data in the file. The issue I am having is viewing the raw ping intensity data

I don't think anyone on here is going to have that info ..... unless Greg checks in and has a resource he can tap into.
What is in the recording is the data being received by the transducer ..... The ping intensity would be the transducer transmit pulse, and there wouldn't be any info about that in a recording..... Only a Humminbird engineer would be able to help you with that.
Have you tried calling customer service to see if they can help?

Hmm... I bet you are going to be getting into the secrets of what makes the 'Bird work so well. Responses are going to be slim.
If it were me and I were going to try and figure this out I'd pick up my oscilliscope and put it between the unit and the transducer with a good charged battery and read my voltages - narrow it down to their signal in hz. (Depending on which frequency you are testing, then take the best amperage reading I could). Some involved math could tell you the intensity of the ping in amps/hz would be my guess. (and I would suspect it to be in mA, as the whole unit for the biggest they have draws like 2.5 amps.)
Unless you were going to try and reverse engineer a sonar system- what would a guy need this information for?
Good luck on your thesis- stay with it. I gave up on mine 7 years ago- wish I would've hung in there now.

I don't know if there is anything in this post that will help, but it's worth a look. He's in Rickard's knowledge level.
