Since the onix 10 has a higher screen resolution is the side imaging clearer/more detailed on that unit than the 1198c SI? I'm trying to justify the higher cost over the 1198 because I'm ready to upgrade from my 998c SI. I know the DI is better but I don't really use DI as much as SI AND 2D sonar.

I have seen mixed reviews on the SI......Some say the 98 series may be as good or better, and others say the SI on the Onix is better.....especially farther out to the side.
Maybe Deil11 or Kosmo will chime in on this.
I would wait and see some more reviews of the new software update for the Onix.....If the reviews are good, I would give my vote for the Onix. Way better DI, and better 2D than the 98 series with the latest software.....You might even decide you like DI.
The Onix has MANY advantages over the 98 series if they get the bugs out of it......Sounds like the slow boot time may still be an issue if that is important to you.

The main difference I saw between my old 1198 and the new Onix on SI was resolution at the end of the range. The 1198 would darken some close to the 150' mark, where the Onix goes on strong. With the 1198 you had to really tune your settings and water composition would mess with the returns. So far my experience with the Onix has been really good returns with out of the box settings and water composition (dirt, algae) doesn't seem to be a huge problem.
The new software update has really done good to the unit. Main gripes were touch screen problems and overall lack of speed between views, etc. The unit is working much faster with the 2.0 update. I did learn that at one point there was a problem related to Autochart and the 2D sonar which was causing CPU usage of 80%. That was really slowing down everything else.

I think Diel, described it best.with the 1198 you get real good si, but you will need to keep adjusting setting for different environments. With the onix you will get real good si with very little adjusting of setting (probably no adjustments needed)

Looks like you will get better engine readings from the Onix via the NMEA2000 interface as well if you choose to set it up.
