Yes......If you just have the 2 units and no other Ethernet accessories, you just need to connect the 2 via an Ethernet cable.
There may be some software dependencies ...... Greg or someone else will probably be able fill you in on that. Some of the older revisions that your 1198 may not communicate properly to the newer software rev's.
You might have to rev up the 1198.

Bob is right about the older software that you may or may not be running in your 1198 unit.
You will actually need two cables to connect them to each other. One will be the AS-EC-QDE adapter cable to go from the 859 unit to one of the AS-EC-XXE Ethernet Connection cables. The “XX” in the last cable name should get replaced by the cable length as they come in 2, 10, 15, 20 and 30-foot lengths (Ex: a 15 foot cable would be an AS-EC-15E).

so what do i need to do about software. I bought the unit new last may.

Check your 1198 unit to see what software version it has in it.

Beer, If you have not registered your units at Humminbird. com, do so. The latest releases and info there should help you out.

okay will do. also the new unit im buying comes preloaded with navionics will it show on both units if linked

There is no map sharing on the Humminbird core units ....only on the Onix.

still havent pulled the trigger on buying this. wondering if I would miss di on the front of the boat. I have it on my console and barely use it but just got me thinking
