The cable for my HDSI TD got pinched in the locking pin for the trolling motor. Since that happened ( so it seems) the depth reading is erratic. I have isolated it to the TD. Anyone have any success splicing the cable ? I know I can do it but I am afraid I will lose image detail. Thanks for the help !

Several here have spliced cables successfully ...
Be sure and solder connections and heat shrink well ... Water intrusion is your enemy..
If you're really careful as you explore into the cable ...you might be able to leave the undamaged wires connected and just splice the damaged wire ...
Also be mindful of the foil shielding to keep it in tact ...
There is this option if the splice is above water ...

If your SI and temp are still working ...you might think about adding the XTM 9 20 along with the AS SIDB Y cable for 2d depth readings ...

Thanks Rickie, not enough room on the TM for a 2nd TD and using the one at the back of the boat would be senseless. The splice would be well above water level. I have a backup TD if all fails. Thanks again !

What happens if you can't keep the shielding together?? I have one I intend to splice, but the foil on the twisted pairs is so thin, it got separated along the way. If it is just shielding can you just wrap foil around the twisted pair and make a successful repair?

I would think so ...
The foil connects to the bare wire drain at the connector shield anyway ...

I can help on this one. the shielding foil is aluminum foil. It's purpose is to block EMF ( electro magnetic flux ) created by other electronics or wires which have current running through them. A good example would be if your transducer wire is running through the same conduit that your outboard motor wire harness is. You can get interference from the alternator charging the battery or the pulses sent from the coils to the tachometer. just wrap it with any aluminum foil and make sure it makes contact with the foil in the cable tape it up and you good to go.
