Title: My 998 getting double echo and reading wrong depth, please help.
Post by: mike82 on August 31, 2014, 04:03:51 PM
My 998 out of the box has always read a double echo in shallow water and hard bottoms. Ive been using it that way because it shows the correct depth on the sonar it just reads the deeper echo which is not the correct depth. I was going to see if you guys could look at my transducer mount and see if that might be causing me issues. I have tried it 1 click up and down as for angle and have had it around a half in deeper. I kept bringing it up untill I lost my roost of water from the transducer.

In shallow water, set your sensitivity to the lowest possible.

Viewing from the BACK - I would have had the XDCR seam center line on the LEFT @ the bottom of the boat....
If you know you're going to fish shallow - set your max depth just beyond it a bit.

You aren’t running the 597ci HD DI unit at the same time are you Mike82?

Im not running the 597 at the same time greg, I have before and a I get quite a bit of interference. This issue happens with everything in the boat off except the 998. I just got my y cable and dual beam transducer today so im hoping it takes care of the problem. If it dosent would it be safe to say the head unit needs to be sent in?

Maybe.  I would try updating the software first, than decreasing the Surface Clutter (set this menu to a higher number).  If that does not help try setting the Water Type menu to the Salt (deep) setting.

Cross-testing with another Humminbird unit that uses the 200/83kHz 2D sonar would be a good way to tell if the problem is in the unit or the transducer.  Just make sure and test in an area where your 998 has had problem reading the bottom.

Today I was having the same issue at 120'.  I was getting the echo in the same general area of the lake and eventually it went away.  I was wondering what kind of bottom would cause this?
I was trolling in fresh water so I called customer service and they suggested changing my setting to saltwater.  This didn't help.  I own a 899 and I had no other sonar on.  I also moved my sensitivity to 3 which also didn't help.

Are you saying you got a double echo that went away...??

Yes.  I was only getting the double echo in one area of the lake.  Each time I went through this area it came back.  The area of the lake I was fishing in was anywhere from 95' to 130'. Not sure if a hard bottom causes this or what?

Hard bottom is what usually causes the double echo ...

This is a factor of the sound pulse reflecting very well off the hard bottom ... Where it then reflects off the water's surface ...and then back to be reflected off the bottom again ...

I have actually seen a few 2d images showing a triple echo ...
