Title: 998C HD SI Issue right out of the box
Post by: LucklessPedestrian on July 26, 2014, 09:11:43 PM
Just received yesterday, finished installing everything on boat, turn it on to get aquainted, everything appears great.  Next I open up and remove card slot cover and half of what appears to be rubber gasket is laying half over the two card slots and covering twist hole for cover pin lock.  Always been a Lowrance guy and thought I give Humminbird a shot, I can understand a electronic component giving out after some time, but this is just poor workmanship and very disappointed in being welcomed to HB family in this manner.  I already registered product right when I received it, so now I get to experience HB customer service right off the bat.

This is not a normal situation. HB hardware quality control is normally very good. With the large volume of units made, I'm guessing one could slip through.
Based on the many post here, HB will make it right. My first thought is that if I had a new unit with zero hours on it and a obvious defect, I'm contacting the
   vendor I purchased it from.

I purchased online, so it will be getting shipped either way, all the other components, GPS and transducer etc are installed on boat.  This isnt a vender issue, it's a mfg poor workmanship issue.  Not sure how HB will handle it, but to satisfy me I feel head unit should be replaced immediately and I shouldn't have to wait to have it worked on.  The two attached photos should be enough for that to happen IMO.

LP,
I would certainly encourage you to call the Humminbird Customer Resource Center folks about this to get it reported.  Was the card reader door in place when you received the 998 unit?  It seems that would not be possible with the seal shifted over blocking the hole like that.  You could fix this yourself if you don’t want to wait: just pop off the bezel and re-position the seal and replace the bezel.  It just snaps on and off.

Do you think that is just the bezel seal?  Any quick tip on how to remove bezel without hacking it up? I contacted HB yesterday through their online customer support since it was Sunday, I didn't get a chance to call them today as I was covered up at work, have the day off tomorrow and going to call them.

I used the end of a P38 can opener in the slots on the bottom side of the bezel to take it right off yesterday with no problems.  The Seal just lays on the front housing and the bezel traps it in place.  When you install the card reader door it creates the seal when you lock it down.

Not to hijack the thread P38 Can Opener.  Greg you a military guy?

My Father was a Marine, is that close enough?
I’ve carried one of these since High School some 30+ years ago.  They are quite handy as a MacGyver tool.  I once saved a life with it (okay, someone could not get a can of coffee opened and said: “If I don’t get my coffee this morning I may kill someone!”).

I have a similar issue with my unit. I purchased my 999 a few months ago and both my SD slots wont hold a card, they don't click in when the SD card cover is placed over them. The only way I can get my map cards to work is to leave the cover off.

Any advice would be appreciated.

That sounds more like the SD card readers themselves Huntin2.  Make sure that you are placing the card reader door correctly and if you are you should call the Humminbird Customer Resource Center folks about this.

I talked to customer service yesterday, they thought I should send unit in,  I agreed as rubber gasket looked compromised from card reader screw lock had been pushing through gasket, they sent me a courtesy Fedex label.  I thought a ok and forwarded email to work, Fedex guy arrives and scanned bar code and said it was invalid.  I ended up shipping unit out UPS on my dime, which I feel is BS.  Unit should get there on Thursday, I'm hoping I'll see unit next week sometime, they said they'll expedite the repair and update software while it's there, we'll see...the whole situation has not given my that warm and fuzzy feeling, that I envisioned the Humminbird Select customer might receive, but then again I'm dreamer...but I do have a P38 just in case (as all former jarheads do).  My Ranger will have to take it's maiden voyage this weekend less it's main bird, kind of like a smile with a tooth missing I'd say.

I don't have a camera with me today but can check with someone else...
I will be on vacation tomorrow and have training classes all next week so I may have to pass on the pics.

Don't feel bad because they completely forgot to put my rubber gasket on in the first place. LOL. I hate to tell you but you are going to have to send the unit in so they can install a new rubber or fix  the one . It is just not aligned when the front cover was put on. WARNING!! If you decide to fix it and they know about it it could void the warranty. Also it will be automatically updated to the latest software . Other than that i LOVE my 998 SI

It's already on the way back to them...I was loving it, until I opened up the card reader cover.  I suspect they are made or assembled overseas, I would hate to think this many could be botched up state side.  I think it just needs last update, like 7.090 or something like that, probably doesn't amt to much, hopefully it isn't buggy.

Liked the video...received unit back to today.  Now the learing curve begins.  I do have a question that haven't been able to find answer yet...I have a new SanDisk 16gb Extreme SD card, I installed for snapshots/video etc, but I haven't been able to see it recognized within the unit when turned on, is there a screen I haven't found yet that shows it installed?

If you turn on the GPS Diagnostic view screen, it should show there.
I'm fairly sure your card is the newer "SDXC" format, it's not supported - get a cheaper SDHC or plain SD format and you should be fine. I run "Class 6" in mine for screenshots fine - recording should be OK also ( though I have limited testing, and a "Class 10" is cheap & easy from Newegg or Amazon)

https://www.sdcard.org/developers/overview/speed_class/ (https://www.sdcard.org/developers/overview/speed_class/)

Upon start up you can look @ your diagnostic screen (press menu when prompted) & see the S/W version your unit has installed also.

I have a similar problem with my 999. Seems you have to have the correct technique to slide the cover on without popping the right hand card. On mine anyways. I played with mine off the boat where I could put it horizontal  and finally figured how to slip the cover on without popping the card.

Thanks for info, must have just overlooked, reading the extreme card fine, it's an SDHC.
