Great site and have learned a lot. Maybe a dumb question but how high up on the transom can a side imaging transducer be mounted and still work correctly? I see them mounted flush with the bottom of the boat but could it be up 3-5 inches if nothing is blocking the view? I upgraded to the HDSI 800 htz
for my 899. Due to medical problems since April I still have not gotten the installation completed.
Thanks,

Sure Arby2, you could even go higher than that as long as the transducer is still in the water when you are using the Si sonar and nothing is blocking the Si sonar to either the left or right sides.

Thanks for the quick reply Greg. My boat dealer had said something about mounting them higher to avoid damage but I thought the "experts" here would be good double check before drilling holes and maybe getting bad readings later.
Thanks,

You may want to think about installing some star board to your transom....
Then extra holes wouldn't have to be drilled into the hull if the mounting position needs moving...
I've even seem some use plastic cutting board material...

Thanks Rickie,
I was actually thinking about using cutting board material for this purpose and to get me more distance from the transom for beam clearance. I have not been able to find starboard around here although I did see a post about Cabala's carrying a transducer mounting board but pretty pricey.
Thanks for the info, great to have some experience available,

Any type of material that is not damaged by immersion in water and you can sink a screw into will work. We used a scrap piece of two-inch thick delrin (?) plastic on one of the company boats, another had some type of nylon material on it.

Hi Arby2, I just ordered the hd si td and decided that I was going to use a stern saver. It's serves the same purpose as the one from cabelas but comes with epoxy glue and you don't have to put any holes in the transom. Just google it.
