Title: Question about unit RMS wattage vs. transducer wattage.

I have a 798 and an 898. I notice a huge difference between the units 2d sonar. The 798 is 500 watts RMS and the 898 is 1000 watts. I noticed that companies like Airmar make transducers that are 1 and 2kw capable, that are $1000 and up. If my unit is 1000 watts and the transducer isn't capable of that kind of wattage, how does this still work?

1.) What is the max wattage that the xnt 9 20 can pump out? Obviously it can be different with different units since the 2d looks much crisper on the 898 while using the same transducer.

2.) If I got, say a 1kw capable 2d transducer would I notice a difference in the 2d images?

If you connect up a 1kW output unit to a 500 watt transducer; you will cause that transducer to prematurely fail just like any other electronic device.  If you overdrive it the part may fail immediately or before it normally should.

The 898 units are a 1,000 watts RMS sonar unit but only when using an optional 50kHz transducer.  When using the 200/83kHz frequencies they are a 500 watt RMS unit.

I do not know the maximum wattage of the XNT-9-20-T transducer but I suspect that it is at least 500 watts RMS.  The maximum wattage of the transducer is a product of its design – not the sonar unit that it is connected to.

If you used a 1kW capable 2D transducer you may or may not get better results.  This may not be a function of the transducer’s maximum wattage but more a function of the sonar beam design or possibly the housing/where it is mounted.

Okay, thats good info. Are the 200/50 ducers okay to use with the 798?

If both units are driving 500watts, why do you suppose I get nicer readings on the 898? Its not that the resolution is better, for some reason when I turn the sensitivity up on the 798 I get more of a slow growing haze on the entire screen rather than seeing more actual fish arches. I would have never noticed if I didn't have two units.

Only partially Rotus.  The 798 units do not have a 200/50kHz setting and so could only use the 200kHz part of the 200/50kHz transducer.

The difference would be in the design of the transmitter and receiver of the 898 unit versus the 798 unit.  That and software differences.
