Title: Marking schools of fish at speed?
Post by: Rotus623 on June 14, 2014, 05:44:45 PM
Hey guys just wondering if anyone has good experience with this. I have an 898 at the console and I am hunting for large schools of landlocked striped bass. My transducer is set very well, and I get minimal turbulence at high speeds. I can easily read the bottom very clearly at 30 MPH.

Cruising speed for me is 21 MPH. I would like to get an idea what the screen looks like over top of schools of fish (particularly striper, but any schooling fish would be great) at speed. These are some shots of feeding stripers at trolling speeds.

And here is just a great example of what striped bass look like on SI.

You would have to have chart speed at 10 but I'm not sure how the screen will look going 20+ mph.

I have also heard to run the unit on 200khz only to clear up screen splatter. I know some of you guys look for fish at higher speeds!!

Make sure the Max Depth setting is set to a value just somewhat more than your actual depth...

The unit will lose bottom at these speeds more than we realize...and a Max Depth setting much less than the factory default of 1500ft will make the unit perform better...

Thanks Rickie that's good info!! Do you have any screenshots of fish at higher speeds? I'd bet you know exactly what to look for!!

This is the best info that I could find. It is on a Lowrance. Do the Humminbirds act similarly?
