Hi there,
I tried to use a Humminbird 987 and now 1197 with my autopilot. The idea was to fill in my scan route in advance and then just let the autopilot drive me on an exact line ;)
The result of this setup was terrible - I went like 100m left and right of my straight line - so it didnīt work at all.
Is the GPS output too slow for using it with an autopilot? When trying to steer with the mapview of the Humminbird I often realise that the screenupdate is always like 5 seconds behind.
Does anybody had the same problems?
My next try will be to feed in another "faster" GPS-signal from an external source.
Kindest regards
Christian

Hallo Christian und willkommen im Forum,
as far as I remember the BAUD rate with which the HBs send is 4800. I don't know if that is sufficient to be used as an autopilot input data.
Concerning your GPS update rate on the 1197:
Which GPS receiver do you use and what software is on your unit?
If you have the AS-GR 16 receiver, change to a AS-GR50 or even better an AS-GRHA (if you still can find one).
The GPS update rate was enhanced with the last updates that came out.
Concerning the "faster" input source:
Are you planning to use a "tuned up" GPS mouse for that? I was also thinking to give this a try, but decided against it, because I'm not sure if that would be save for the unit.

Christian,
What version software do you have installed on your unit? Also, tell us a little bit about your setup. Be specific on what you have installed and how its installed.
The lates HB software updates the GPS 4 times per second now!
Thanks,
Robert

Never had a problem with a slow GPS and my simrad AP11 or AP26.
I have to use a fluxgate or Gyrocompass and a rudderfeedback to keep a steady course.
When moving very slowly even then the Simrad can't keep te course and get lost.
