Title: 798 internal gps issues - out of nowhere
Post by: alexpalmer1 on May 19, 2014, 10:56:28 PM
Hi all.

I just got a 798, and everything was working great - updated to 6.740 (latest) and got my i-pilot link working.

On day #2 - the gps stopped working... it started with a 'lost gps signal' - and after a reboot says GPS UNCONNECTED in the accessory page.

I've tried power cycling many times - factory defaults - and even plugged in only the power connector at the bow of the boat, which was connected directly to the trolling batteries. Still no luck.

Any other ideas before I send it in? Sucks that it's a brand new unit, and already having problems.

Welcome to the Humminbird Side Imaging Forums alexpalmer1.
Sorry that your first post has to be about the GPS not working on your 798 unit.  Nothing that I can recommend you do except contact your local retailer about getting the unit fixed.  Maybe you can talk them into an external GPS Receiver to use instead of having to be without your unit.

Just curious: what software version are you running in your i-Pilot Link?

i-pilot 1.16

Can the i-pilot link not share it's GPS via ethernet?

is there any connector inside the unit to the GPS? i.e. if I open it up, could the cable to the internal GPS just be loose?

alexpalmer1,
No, the i-Pilot Link does not share its GPS over the Ethernet connection.
I do not think that version of the 798 has a connector for the internal GPS as I believe it is built onto the PCB.  Opening the unit will void your warranty anyways.

I had this same issue, actually exchanged unit because I thouggt it was defective. Hooked up the new one and sametthing, I lost signal. I soldered all connections and cleaned battery cables and have not had anymore problems. It has been working like a charm ever since. 8)

Update:

After the unit was in for repair under warranty for 3 weeks, it's back and seems to be working properly. Not sure what they did, but hopefully it stays working.
