Title: Upgrade Question
Post by: rdfkentucky on May 13, 2014, 02:08:58 PM
Hi.  New member and my first post. I have a 581i on the bow and a 798ci HD SI on the dash. I have a 798 TD on the TM where I can swap them. I still new at using all the features of the 798. I was thinking about upgrading to another unit this year to replace the 581i and stay around $1000 budget. I notice that they quit making the 798's and have found some for around $650 new. I was thinking that would be a good way to go since I'm set up at both places for it. But after coming here and reading some post, I wonder if I would be better off saving some more and get a 899ci HD SI or 859ci HD DI series with the new technology?

Thanks
Rick

I would generally recommend getting the newest hardware platform, which is the 899.
Is the 798 the HD model, or the older model?  The reason I ask is that you will have issues networking the older 798 to the 899, since the 899 won't support the interlink, and an older 798 will not have ethernet.
If the 798 is the non HD version, it will complicate the decision.

I would go with the 8XX or larger and connect them with Ethernet. Then you share waypoints, transducers, etc.
