Title: Onix SOG fluctuations
Post by: aholzhausen01 on May 07, 2014, 11:33:14 AM
I got my boat with the new Onix out on the lake this week and while trolling at around 2.0 mph, the SOG reading on the Onix was changing greatly from update to update up to  1.6 to 2.4 mph.  This performance seems very  different from my 898c SI unit.  Is is because of the built in gps?  Can it be improved with firmware algorithms?  Do I need to get an external GPS puck like I have with the 898?  My boat is a Lund 1850 Tyee with a full windshield.  I have it mounted on the dash with a RAM mount.  It seems to have good visibility to the sky

If the ONIX unit is mounted so there is nothing blocking the signals from the GPS satellites than it should work better than what you described.  I do not remember reading anything about the software updates for this unit fixing any GPS issues either but it might not be a bad idea to update the software if it is not running the current version (check your My Humminbird account for this).  If that does not help you may want to call the Humminbird Customer Resource folks about getting the ONIX unit in to be serviced.

Thanks Greg,   I'm running 1.150, the latest version.  I'll take it out a few more times to see how it does.  There is always some fluctuation with my 898 but not as much as I experienced with the Onix.  I'll post back with more trials.
