I need to add a temperature sensor to my 898/ 899 that are networked together. Do I need any kind of adapter to hook this up?

No, just plug it right up.
Which unit are you connecting this to and why?

I was thinking the 899 up front, just because it will be easier to run the cable. But I'm listening if you have a suggestion.

Are you after water temperature or air temp?
You can get the water temp from your transducer.
I have have both hooked up. I get the water temp from my SI ducer and I bought a speed/temp unit that I mounted under the console (out of direct sunlight) and use it to get the air temp. On my graph readouts the #1 temp is water and #2 is air.

If you are going to connect the TG-W up to the 899 unit (or any XXX9 unit) you will need to use the AS-T-Y adapter cable to do so. This temperature will replace the temperature from the transducer.
On the 898 unit there is a separate connector on the back of the unit that you can plug it right up to. It will show this as the auxiliary (Aux.) temperature (if it is already getting a temp from the transducer) and has separate adjustment menus just like the regular temperature.
Since your units are Ethernet networked, you can connect the TG-W up to the 898 unit and share it with the 899 unit.
Excuse the nosiness, but why the additional temp and why not use the transducer temp on the 899? I know of many that use a TG-W to monitor the water temp in their livewell or bait tanks.

Since I networked these units I can't get a Read out for water temperature off either transducer. What am I missing? The manual says "International Unit Only" have temperature read out available.

Which manual states that?
You should be seeing all sources of temperature when you open the Network Source Setup Dialog Box. Make sure that each transducer is giving you a temperature first by turning on only one unit and using the transducer connected to that unit as the temperature source.

But I'll do what you say first. I knew had temperature prior to networking the 898, and I know both transducers have a temp probe built in. With the network it would not let me select temperature source from either unit. And I undated the 898 with 6.740. Am I doing something wrong?

I powered up the 899 and had NO temperature settings in Setup or network tab
The 898 I did find the temperature in setup and Network tab

Are you meaning page 109 of the 899ci HD Si’s manual? It shows the Units – Depth, Units – Temperature and Units – Distance menus which are only available on international model units. On domestic (U.S.) model units these settings are preset to Feet, Fahrenheit and Feet/Statute Miles and are not adjustable so the menus will not appear but the units are still capable of displaying depth, temperature and speed/distance.
Try powering up the 898 and 998 units by themselves without the Ethernet cable connected and see if they will show the temperature. This can be done with the boat on the trailer. If they are still not showing the temperature sensor as being connected, there may be something wrong with the temperature sensor in the transducer(s).

Thank You Greg, I have not update the 899 with it's new update, will that make a difference?

It shouldn’t as the 899 has had the temperature capability since it was introduced.
