Post by: pigg on March 03, 2014, 05:29:24 PM
newbie here trying to figure out the best settings for my unit I have the 998c si at console and a 898c si at bow I played with them a little Saturday while I was fishing but didn't learn anything  I fish fresh water only and deepest water probably  40ft  at the most I have my side scan at 40ft out just because a friend said that it was easy for him to learn at 40 so I figured id give it a shot settings I know are different for everyone I just need a good starting point all I found the other day with the 998 was a pile of cinderblock's which was awesome full detail on screen blew me away but I never found any trees that I could tell was a tree and I was over top a few that I know for a fact was there because I could see them about a ft or so under water    any help would be appreciated thanks in advance

For 2d views I would set the Beam Select to 83kHz/200kHz (under the Sonar tab)...for the widest coverage....

For SI viewing I would set the Beam Select to 200kHz only (under the Sonar tab)...the SI screen scroll is a little faster with this setting...

I use 455kHz Imaging Frequency (under the Sonar tab) for finding new structure ... because the screen is brighter all the way to the edges of the display...

I use 800kHz Imaging Frequency (under the Sonar tab) for scanning closer to known structure...because the image is crisper and more detailed ...

SI Range about 50-75ft...sometimes 100 if I'm in new water just looking for new structure to mark...

Chart Speed to match boat speed - 1mph = 1 Chart Speed ... 2mph = 2 Chart Speed ... (Sometimes I increase Chart Speed just to elongate fish echoes)...

I keep the SI Enhance menu overlayed onto the SI image anytime I'm viewing SI ...

This gives instant access to the SI Sensitivity setting which I use as a "Brightness" control of the SI image...SI Sensitivity up brightens the image - SI Sensitivity down darkens the image ...

I keep SI Contrast (in SI Enhance menu) at about 10-12...

I only raise SI Sharpness (in SI Enhance menu) to look for individual fish echoes ...raising Sharpness makes fish stand out but makes overall image "grainy"...

I change Pallete colors depending on the lighting conditions at the time...

*Bright sunny - I like Inverse or Green...
*Overcast - I like blue or Amber 2 ... Sometimes Brown but not often ...
