Title: 898 down image problem
Post by: Curry87 on February 19, 2014, 08:42:54 PM
I recently bout an new 1198 an moved my 898 to the bow. An went out last weekend an my down image is a real faint color but my other screen selections are fine. I'm not sure if there is a electrical interference or if there is something wrong with the unit itself but never had this problem?

Welcome to the Humminbird Side Imaging Forums Curry87.

Which unit is having the faint DI sonar readings?
If the 1198 unit; are you using the same setting that you used in your 898 unit?
What software version is each unit running?
Can you test each unit on the other unit’s transducer to see where the problem is?

The 898 is the unit having the problem. Orginally I had a 798 on the front an I literally unplugged that unit an plugged the 898 an now is when the problem started.

If I'm reading your post right your using the ducer from the 798 that was replaced.  Did you try the 898 back at the console with it's original xducer to see if you still had the problem?

Ok I tried the 898 back on the console with its original transducer an still having the same imaging issue. The version that is running now is 6.610. The 1198 version is 6.640 I put the 1198 on the front an it's fine.

Did you update the software in the 898 from the time that it was originally at the console...??

I did update it once last year an it was fine all year.is there a new software up date for it right now? I have not updated it since I moved it to the front an would b runnin off a different transducer.

I had a di issue when I went to si enhance and adjusted the sharpness. I  did a restore. It resolved the problem. After that I installed the latest software.6.74.
Never had another issue with down imaging. If you search my posts you will see a picture posted of what di looked like when faulty.

What model number xducer is the 898 attached to at the bow...??
(It should be printed on the cable about 1 foot from the connector end)...

The transducer cable say 180T

It would either be...:

XNT 9 SI 180 T (this housing is about 3 inches long)
XHS 9 HDSI 180 T (this housing is nearly 6 inches long)

Can you make out the rest of the lettering on the cable...??

The transducer cable is the xnt 9 SI 180T

That is the Compact SI xducer...it has shorter piezoes ...which would be normal to have somewhat lesser detailed SI and DI...

Try the 898 back on its original stock xducer..(which I assume is mounted on the transom?...)

I have already tried the 898 back on the console with my thru-hall transducer an I was still having the same issue.

A couple of things to check...:

When the 898 is attached to bow xducer (the previous 798 xducer-XNT 9 SI 180 T)...the "Imaging Frequency" under the Sonar tab must be set to 455kHz...because the XNT 9 SI 180 T piezoes are not designed to operate at 800kHz...

They will work at 800kHz...but not very well...

Also...on another note...it's very possible that version of software that the 898 was updated to last year...may need completely different settings to get the same results...(we never really know what HB puts into these updates)...

You can try adjusting the DI Sensitivity and Contrast in the DI Enhance menu...
You can try adjusting the DI Width setting under the Sonar tab...
You can try updating the 898 to the version you say is now available for that model..
You can try reverting the 898 software to the previous version that you were having better results with...

Can you post some screenshots of these "faint" DI images you are experiencing...??
