Title: Help with transducer install
Post by: troutman140 on February 19, 2014, 08:15:51 AM
Hello everyone,
I am about to install the transducer for new 798ci si and I have a few questions. The old transducer on the boat is mounted on the transon and I want to be sure that this location is the best place to install the new one. I have included a few pics. This is where the previous owner had the transducer mounted.
Thanks in advance for your answers.

Looks like the last owner did not install the hardware for that transducer the correct way.  Did he happen to say whether the unit he was using worked at high boat speeds or not?

You may be able to get the Compact Side Imaging (CSi) XNT-9-Si-180-T transducer in that same location but it would be exposing it to possible damage from debris in the water.  I would try testing the current transducer to see if it still works and if it does; install it inside-the-hull along with an AS-Si-DB-Y cable and install the CSi transducer on the next step up (would need more pictures for a better description of where).

Humminbird Greg,
Thanks for your reply! When I used the boat the depth was always reading a deeper depth then what I was actually in. Yes, the old transducer does work, and I had been thinking of installing it inside of the hull for higher speed operation; I read about this option from reading all of the posts here in the forum. If I install the csi onto the next step up would this location be too high? I will take some pics in the morning and post them.

It would be too high for high-speed depth readings but not for Si/Di sonar readings at slower speeds.  Your 2D sonar will all come from the inside-the-hull transducer if you use the AS-Si-DB-Y cable.

HB Greg,
Here are more pics of my transom.
Thanks!

Try installing the Compact Side Imaging transducer right under the motor - assuming there is enough room for it when you have the motor tucked in for blast-off that is.

Hey Greg thanks for the reply.
I thought about mounting the transducer on the upper step, not right behind the engine but off to the side of it. I did not mount it there because if you look at the picture, the left and right edges of the hull are rounded and stick out a bit. It looks as though the rounded edges would be an obstruction on the left and right.

troutman you are right.  I did not catch that when looking at the pictures but see it very clearly now that you pointed it out.  Maybe mount it off to the side like you stated but on some sort of block that stands the transducer out a bit.  Not sure how far though as I don’t know how far those edges project backwards.
