I read somewhere that the only difference was in the type of transducer.

The 899 does not come standard with the HDSI transducer, but it can be upgraded to it via an exchange from HB.

The 899 has a different ethernet connector and requires and adaptor cable.
The 899 has a faster processor which is generally a good thing and could affect compatability with future accessories.  It is also the current model which is probably better for resale value.

I'd go for the 899 and upgrade the transducer.

Following this thread would it make more sense to put the standard transducer on the back and put an HD transducer on the trolling motor? Can't afford unit on console and bow.

A lot of guys are using this exact setup due to the lack of funds needed for 2 complete units...

Some are even adding a second gimbal bracket and power source so that the head unit can be moved from the console station to the bow station...

That would depend on where you want to be able to use the 800kHz and have the sharper 455kHz Si/Di sonar.

Yea this is crazy if you ask me. I paid $1250 a year ago off ebay for my 898HD. I sometimes go onto BBCBOARDS.net and look around at the used electronics forum. You see plenty of 898 non-HD units for sale between $7-800. Rarely ever see the 898HD for sale. I think that is because the HD version of the 8 series were only made for a year or so. Funny thing is, that new 898hd's are from $1100-$1250. The 899's are right at a grand. Not sure if thats because the sellers aren't willing to take a loss on the older HD units or what. I love my 898 and am glad that they will be repairable for a number of years, and will still continue to get software updates. Either way, SI is getting more and more affordable, and that is a great thing for all of us!!

I also think that since the ONIX and the ION came out this year, and they scratched the 7 series, with the 8 series being the entry level ethernet capable unit, that this year was just an odd man out. It will all level off soon. Im just glad Im catchin fish.......
