Title: Where is the information HB's Onix units
Post by: George on January 21, 2014, 01:08:12 PM
I am interested in the 12" Onix, but have not been able to find out any information on it.  Such as what is included in the purchase and what transducers will work with it.  I would hate to spend the money and find out that it is so unique that nothing works with it.  If that is the case I may spend my money on a 12" Lowrance unit.

My preference is to purchase HB units, if I need help I know where to go - Here.  Are there any videos?  It appears that HB is ready to share their information or maybe I am missing something.

Largest ONIX is the 10.4".
Largest ION is the 12".

What little information from HB website is here:
ONIXci SI Combo: http://store.humminbird.com/products/748451/ONIX10ci_SI_Combo (http://store.humminbird.com/products/748451/ONIX10ci_SI_Combo)

ION 12: http://store.humminbird.com/products/748447/ION_12 (http://store.humminbird.com/products/748447/ION_12)  with blank webpage.

ONIX/ION Product manual:
http://store.humminbird.com/media/document/ONIXandIONOperationsGuide.pdf (http://store.humminbird.com/media/document/ONIXandIONOperationsGuide.pdf)

No information on the ONIX/ION DSP Transducer : XT-14-20-HDSI-T

Very frustrating at the least.

I would hang in there a while yet George.  You are going to loose SI range with the 12T, and it won't talk to your existing stuff either.

The jury is still out on the ONIX SI range.  The transducer is supposed to be an "all in one" SI and DI transducer with a dedicated DI crystal and uses digital instead of analog technology.  We have asked for some very shallow water SI images to assess whether the digital technology has solved the problem the 12T has with SI range.
Bill Carson and others have posted some images over on BBC, but we are still waiting to see some shallow SI and 83Khz 2D images.  The DI images do look really good.
Smartstrike looks like it could be a good tool also.

I found this image in a Swedish catalogue. There are two almost identical transom transducers, they differ only in the lower 2D frequency. The XT 14 74 HDSI T uses 50 kHz and the XT 14 20 HDSI T has 83 kHz. The first model is probably better suited for deepwater use. As usual there are no data on horizontal resolution or length, but they look a bit longer than the HDSI transducer.

That transducer is assembled wrong. with the bottom bolts like that, the kick-up feature isn't going to work.

I'm thinkin that xducer cable is looking bigger than the legacy xducer cables...

That's not going to sit well with Terrova owners....

But I do like running mine down the Terrova's shaft slot!

Just had the 360 and Onix CI SI 8 installed.  All looks well while I am learning but the SI is just a black screen???  Have any one run into that problem?  DI and 2D works fine but the Onix will not show anything other than a black screen on the SI.
  This is strange

What transducer or sonar source do you have selected in the set up menu?
What transducer(s) do you have connected to the ONIX unit?
You are testing this while on the water, right?

I don't know if this is relevent to your set up, but I had the same problem and eventually fixed it quite easily.  My installation has two transducers:  one for 2D and one for DI/SI.  There is a Y cable that the two cables from the transducers go into, and that goes into the back of the Onix.  My installer had inadvertently connected the transducers to the wrong ends of the Y cable and I was getting black screens as well.  Once I got them fixed, it started working immediately.  I was not able to find any labeling on the Y cable that indicated which transducer connect to which end of the Y, but the thickness of the cables varies and that was my first clue that it was wrong.

HB Greg and Squam:

Appreciate your replies.
Going out for second Onix/360 test this weekend if weather allows.  Units were connected at my local BPS through a hub assy but will double check the connections and the set up menu.  How impressive this system is, so absolutely want to have all functions operational.
Thanks again to you both to even reply to a rookie.  Hopefully I will learn this equipment and be able to assist/advise a noobie behind me.
