Title: Track Storage Using Up Memory?
Post by: Doc Stressor on December 21, 2013, 09:16:53 AM
I tend to leave my track function on when I fish at anchor. I find that the day's tracks will terminate on their own on the way back in a the end of the day. It seems as if the memory registers are getting filled up. My unit (998) appears to  continue accumulating track data while the boat is not moving. Is that the case?

I like to leave the display on while jigging or bait fishing to see what's going on under the boat. What is the best protocol to keep the memory register from getting filled up? Will cancel navigation do it once the boat is at anchor? Or do I need to erase the current track each time.

I don't have too many issues with it filling up, but I clear mine every couple trips as needed and save the ones I want to keep.

I have read of issues where the chart function seems to be off by placing the boat icon up on dry land...and clearing the track data solves this...

While this has never really been confirmed...it "seems" to work...(I've seen it on my 1197)...

The "official" response (in the manual if I recall)....is that the the track is supposed to "overwrite" the 1st sequential track points as new track points are created over the unit capacity...

I erase my track every day...(and sometimes more than once a day)...

I find that I often got displaced tracks. They would appear well inland and sometimes even going to South Africa on Google Earth in Humminbird PC. Deleting all current nav data never really solved this problem for me. I recently reformatted the memory registers and I haven't seen the problem since then.

But I still find that my tracks are often not complete. They seem to stop on the way home from 40+ miles offshore. That's why I suspect that the problem might be the result of leaving the unit on while fishing all day.

If could be but it would all depend on how many trackpoints you have used.  Once the maximum number of trackpoints are used up in the Current Track, the unit will delete the first trackpoint and place it at the end, than it will take the second trackpoint and place it at the end and so on...
Some ways around this would be to:
1. Once you have arrived at your destination, save your Current Track.  That will allow the unit to start over with a new Current Track and you will have another 20,000 trackpoints to use.
2. Set the “Trackpoint Interval” and/or “Track Min Distance” to higher settings so that you use fewer trackpoints while moving.  This may also keep the unit from using trackpoints while you are stationary or near stationary.
