I have a 798 linked with a 998 via ethernet connection.
the 798 will lose gps signal at times and requier power off or format nav. derectories to get the signal back. Some days its fine and others its a real pain. today I used it by itself with the 998 disconnected compleatly. and the problen seemed worse. I'm guessing that its a software problem because it never happened before. It has the current update and i didn't have the problem with the old software. Also have to mention that it is on its own battery and there is no way for the signal to be blocked in the boat. I may have to load the old software but i do not have it anymore.

So this problem started right after you updated the software?
Do you know what version of software the unit had in it before you updated it?
It sounds more to me like either the internal GPS Receiver could be going bad or that the electrical connection to the unit could be starting to fail. Low power to the unit can cause the GPS to fail as well. Check all electrical connections to the 798 unit and fix any that are loose or dirty. Be sure and check the fuse, fuse holder and battery connections too.

I may have had an electrical problem. Checked wiring and reassembled we'll see if this helps.
