i have an 1198 on the way and have been reading up on this forum, but im not sure whats going on with the firmware updates. whats the safest known version? is it affecting just a few people who are happening to come to the forum or is it a more established issue and should stay away from certain updates? and is there a link that states what features were added or changed per each upgrade?

My advice to you is to leave your machine alone and to just
learn it well.
You can always update the software in the future, once you get
some experience on your unit.
The safest known update will depend on what accessories you have
(360, Ipilot, Radar, XM Weather). Only people who have had experience
with a bad update are going to know which is the safest update for their particular unit and accessories.
Chill out on the updates and just enjoy your new machine for awhile.

i upgraded from a 798 non hd to the 1198 to use with my ipilot link terrova. its coming with version 5.410 installed, and i am happy to stay there if it will work with the pilot link, otherwise what version should i be looking for to get that interactivity.

Your 1198c Si unit will require software version 6.570 or higher to work with the i-Pilot Link trolling motor.

I also have a 1198c si being shipped, and I have been reading on forums about it. I called HB about a swap for the AS GPS HS They will swap out new for new for 50.00 That sounded great to me! (UNTILL) I started reading all the problems with firmware. :'( I have always used Raymarine and was looking at lowrance but decided on HB. I hope I didn't make a mistake. I'm one of the few who only salt water fish and some people around me have HB and love them. I like the concept of the AS GPS HS, But now I don't know what to do. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Some are reporting very good images with the versions needed to run the AS GPS HS antenna...
Maybe you will be one those with good success...
