That would be my guess also Dave...

Some of the stuff is tall enough to create a shadow in the first blue pic...

Dave
At 27' and 29' I'm not thinking weeds. The 0.4mph makes it hard to know if it's a single item drawn many times
or a large area with similar bottom content.

Dave a little more information would be helpful. Are these taken in a lake? A man made lake?

Just guessing here but in the top picture the "humps" or "objects" are probably rocks, but not weeds.

Same in the orange picture.

The last photo (not knowing where it is) looks partially man-made like the edge on a submerged roadbed.

Judging by the amount of clutter in the water column and the fact that the water is shallow it leads me to believe that the sensitivity is turned up a little high.

More information would sure help.

taken in a river,
most of the bottom is muddy/sand with a rippled effect from the  river current i beleive...and also some smooth sand flats

.... the  mottled appearance  im asking about..(i think may be weeds) is at the end of a long smooth sandy transition.
and seems to be in patchy areas, i have images from same waterbody with rocks ...they have a differnt appearance with a discernable shadow..
im trying to learn how to set SI to show fish near the bottom (walleye)
...having a tough time getting it right  ...
ps the ones that are suspended are easy to find with shadows...have tried sharpness but find it grainy....

Not that I'm an expert, but I have been fooling with my settings for a while now tryin I get things right. I think that you need to set your sensitivity down (images are really bright) and speed up to 3mph or so. What was your chart speed set on? Here are he kinds of snapshots that I have been getting after lots of hours "fishing." Hahahaha.  (http://i803.photobucket.com/albums/yy317/rotus623/88E5C1AF-7DCD-4D70-9526-3456EF74E2DD-919-000000A5EA943260_zpsf0713787.jpg)
