Title: Minnkota US2 Humminbird Interface
Post by: jbmoccio on July 25, 2013, 01:00:09 PM
Hey guys,

I recently upgraded my Humminbird 597ci HD on the transom to a 898c HDSI and then hooked up the 597 to a Minnkota Terrova through US2 on the bow.  While I am still learning the intricacies of the Down Imaging and Side Imaging, I am amazed by the traditional 2d sonar provided by the 898.  It is easy to mark fish and see bait in the water column.  However, my 597 does not provide the clarity.  Looking at the specs, it seems that the frequency and power of the two units is comparable (I do not have the 8000w transducer).  With that being said I would like to get some opinions on the following questions:

1)  If the frequency and power is similar, shouldn't I be able to get similar images?  (I have read a little bit about how frequency and power work with locators but maybe my assumption is wrong.)
2)  Along those lines, could it be that my setting are off on the 597?  IE When I use the 898 I am typically on the main motor at 2-3mph and when I am on the 597 I am usually using the bow mount at a slower speed.  How can I adjust for that?
3)  Could it be that the US2 transducer in the Minnkota is not as good?

Thank you for your time, I really appreciate any info you can give.

You should be able to get comparable results with both units.  I think that there has been more than one version of the US2 transducer (different cone angles maybe) so that may be what you are seeing or it could be a failing US2 transducer or something wrong with the 597ci HD unit itself.  Check your 597ci HD unit by connecting up to the power and transducer for your 898 unit and see if the results are better or not.
