I’m trying2 get my VHF radio to receive gps position from my Hummingbird external gsp puck.
Equipment
898 si ( had firmware 6.180, but just updated to 6.420 hoping it would help, but still the same)
Uniden UM 380 with MMSI set
Uniden lists
Connect the BARE wire of the included accessory cable to the GROUND WIRE on your
GPS receiver.
2. Connect the YELLOW wire of the included accessory cable to the GPS DATA OUTPUT
WIRE on your GPS receiver.
I have the Humminbird gps with the red, black & white wire.
Red not used
Black connected to bare on Uniden
White connected to Yellow on Uniden.
I’m wondering one of 2 possibilities
(a) I need the green black and white Humminbird external gps.
(b) Uniden states to connect to a plotter the brown neg to be connected to the Neg NMEA input.( I do not have one on the pig tail)
I’m not sure (b) applies “yet” as I’m looking for 1 way communication, the second way (returned communication..radio to plotter) would be to have the plotter show a calling ship’s location on the screen.
Any idea what I’m missing here?
Thanks.

Did you set the NMEA Output menu to the “On” setting?
I have not heard of the Uniden radios requiring the $GP prefix for the NMEA Sentences, has anyone else? This is what the Green wire connections does, is change the prefix to the NMEA Sentences. You can get the same thing by splicing into the GPS cable that is between the GPS Receiver and the connector to the unit.

Thank You, I'm sure I'm missing something small.
Did you set the NMEA Output menu to the “On” setting?
yes, and in both firmware versions
Found the green conductor..nuttin.
as of today I've tried both the white and green
even tried the Uniden second ground option.
Does anyone have this opperational?
If so, what about the receiving option of radio posting on your screen?

I don’t know why it is not working. Maybe someone with the same setup will see and reply to this post.
No, we are a “talker” only for the NMEA 0183 data. If you had an AIS system we could display that data but not from a DSC radio.

I have not given up on.
My best bet to date is HB is not keeping up on NMEA firmware versions.
Ie..firmware as a rule is backwards compliant, but not always forwards compliant.
I have the stas now my vhf radio will support..ie version 4.01 of NMEA
Seems most connectable items should allow ie buad rate etc adjustments.
When I turn on NMEA from my HB menu..I get options of on and off only.
So question becomes.
What NMEA version is HB up to?
Why not the menu item option of adjusting?

The NMEA Output Baud rate is controlled by the GPS Receiver and not solely by the Humminbird control head itself. So it is not as simple as making a change to the unit’s software. This would require a change in the GPS Receiver itself.
