What is the display showing when the 998 "hangs" on startup...??

if i remember it simply shows the humminbird pic and say "loading".   I left it for a few minutes, working around the boat, but had to unplug to reboot,  lol.

I’m going to split this post off from this topic as it covers a different problem.

 johnny,

Which GPS Receiver do you have connected to the 998 unit?
What software version are you running in the 998 unit?

If there are any mapping cards or memory cards in the unit, take them out and see if that makes any difference or not.

Have you checked the power connections between the unit and the battery?  No loose or corroded/dirty connections, even with the fuse/fuse holder and battery connection?
Has your battery been load tested?

Can you try testing your unit on someone else’s boat that has one of the larger 800/900 or 1100 series Humminbird units?

hey thanks for the concern.  the gps receiver came with the unit, model i will have to look up. put the unit in the boat about 2 weeks ago.  I do solder my connections.   just installed update 6.68
 0.  went over all connections, all good, battery sitting at 12.4 volts, and it is deep cycle, new this spring and tests great.  don't have any friends I can swap with, so I will try and remove SD card next time.  When this happens, it doesn't even respond to the power button.  the only thing i was left with was unplug the unit and plug it back in.  did it once before the update,  version 6.42, and again after update,  version 6.68.   i am not too worried,  as long as it doesn't happen too too much.

It shouldn’t happen at all if your power connections are good.
If you are running software version 6.680 and it is happening then the GPS Receiver model does not matter (the newer GRP GPS Receiver has to be run on 6.300 or higher version of software].

If it still does it with the SD and map cards removed; contact your local service center about this.

thank you Greg for the great info.   this week end  will tell.  maybe while I was checking connections, I may inadvertently have solved the problem, in which case, it may be back some day.   time will tell.   good fishing all.

Oooooopppsss,  it did it again.  hope a new software update someday will solve it.

How have you got on with this?

Mine has done the same on a number of occasion's.

To avoid it happening I push and hold the power on button until the loading screen is displayed, then it loads correctly

If I don't push and hold it seems to always do it, If I do push and hold it seems never to do it.

				Try this:
After seeing the yellow navigation warning message when you power your unit on; try waiting a couple of minutes before you hit any button to continue.

Try updating the firmware to the latest version 6.740
