Title: 360 review and issues...
Post by: Scrutch on June 09, 2013, 11:04:18 PM
I have an 1198 and the 360 imaging transducer.

I've had this thing about a month now and have used it on the water three times. Lets start with the positives...

I love the idea of looking forward of the boat and scanning structure and cover all around the boat.

The installation was a breeze.

Humminbird support has been very helpful so far. ....segway...

It's a good thing because I've needed them. Now for a few negatives,

The interference issue continues to rear its ugly head. I have a Terrova non-US2 TM. It interferes terribly with my 360. When the TM turns on, it's a white out on the 360 screen. The DI and SI screens are fine now thanks to the ferrite rings I've installed that HB send me. I've been chasing my tail for a LONG time on this issue.

I keep getting error messages that the 360 unit doesn't deploy or retract fully when doing that from the head unit. This is the next issue to discuss with HB.

The software doesn't seem to be quite there yet. It seems buggy. I'm using software version 6.64. The screen switches to the nav screen almost randomly.
And I get another error message that says something like 360 lost contact with source.

The heading sensor doesn't seem to work correctly. The boat icon points in odd directions when underway. It should be pointing in the direction I'm traveling.

The imaging doesn't seem to be as sharp as the SI and DI images. Some of this might be a learning curve on my part, but I'm going on four years with this technology and I think I know my way around it pretty well.

So Scrutch:
I hear that the 360 doesn't work well when the boat is moving.
If you're anchored, and all the electronics are off except your main
sonar, can you make out fish on the 360.
Can you see them coming in and out of the sonar screen circle?

Where is the AS GPS HS mounted..??

I have read that mounting the pick too close to the TM can cause errant readings in the heading line caused by possibly the magnets in the TM...

In a nutshell, yes I can see fish IF I'm anchored and my TM is off. I really want to be able to hit the spot lock on my Terrova and see fish that well. Drifting is fine too but I'm so used to the spot lock that it is cramping my style not being able to use it like I want.  Hopefully I can as soon as I get the interference eliminated.   I'm not sure I can get it fixed this week or not.  I hope so, I'm going to be using it at Table Rock the week of the 17th.

The puck is on the transom right next to the 360 unit.

Can you add the ferrite rings to the 360 cable

I don’t remember hearing about anyone doing this yet but I don’t see why you could not add the ferrite rings to any cable.  You need to know that that this is where the interference is getting into the system though.

Scrutch,

I have had similar issues with my 360 unit giving an error regarding failure to deploy/retract.  I have found that the unit is definitely power hungry and would sometimes not deploy/retract unless my engine is running.

Another to to check is your deploy/retract speed.  I adjusted mine to 7mph and allot of the errors went away.

Hope this helps,

Kevin

My 360 system works great.  The key is a very slow idle.
