Title: Velixar Alumaducer
Post by: Brians on May 30, 2013, 12:09:23 PM
I have an idea to relocate a 798 from the bow to the console. And replace it with a 898. I will then have a 998hd SI and a 798hd SI on the console. And my reasoning for that will be the 798 has its own internal antenna. I will have a back up GPS in case my gps puck goes down. I had an incident where my gps wire on my 998 came loose and my gps went down. Unfortunately I had the wire bundle wrapped with some armor flex and didn't catch it until I traced it down. So now back to my original question. I am wanting to run a shoot through Velixar aluminum transducer off of the 798 while running down the lake (because I loose depth with my 998 currently). Then when I slow to an idle I can switch  the 798 back to the dual band SI transducer. I will probably run the 798 on the 2d sonar mode. The 998 on navigation and SI Mode. The 898 on the bow will probable get ran on the Di and 2d sonar mode. Does anybody have any experience with what I am trying to do?  I the end the 798 will have a switch mounted to go back and fourth between transducers. How complicated is this. Thanks Brian.

Seeing as you have a Ethernet capable 798 unit; why don’t you connect the AlumaDucer and TS3 Transducer Switch to the 998c HD Si unit you have at the console and Ethernet connect the 798ci HD Si unit to it as well?  Than you can share the transducer with the 798 unit and still be able to switch between the AlumaDucer and HDSi transducer you already have installed.  This will be one less transducer hanging off the back of your boat which will make things less complicated and it will eliminate any possible sonar-to-sonar interference from these two units running at the same time.  The internal GPS of the 798 could still be shared if needed.

I have a transducer mounted to my trolling motor for my 798. If I lost a GPS signal on my 998 could I turn on my 798 without dropping the trolling motor in the water and use the signal off of the 798 to run the  gps on the 998? Will this mess up the functionality of the 798?

If that 798 is Ethernet connected to the 998 unit this will work Brian.  It will not mess up the 798 in any way to run it with the transducer out of the water.  You will get some strange water depth readings possibly but you could also just turn the sonar off in the 7987 unit if that bugs you (or share the transducer from the 998 unit).

Thanks Greg. I appreciate it.
