Title: 998/958 interference problems
Post by: ad11583c on May 14, 2013, 10:07:12 AM
I have always ran Lowrance until this year. I have heard good things about Humminbird so I was excited to give them a try. However, I am having some issues with them and wondering if anyone can help me out.

I have a 998c SI and a 958c SI at the helm of my boat. They are connected with an Ethernet cable and I updated to the latest software this past week. I typically fish fresh water in less than 40 feet deep.

I would like to run both units (998 and 958) with split screens (map, side scan, down scan, and traditional sonar). When I try to run them like this the 958 gets a lot of interference and the depth bounces around a lot and causes the screen to shrink (see the attached pictures).

I have contacted Humminbird and they pretty much said that was normal and there was nothing that could be done which surprised me. Does anyone else have a similar set up and has a fix for the the issue I am referring too?

Also if you are in split screen more (down scan and sonar) is there a way to auto zoom the bottom 10' or so like you can with Lowrance?

Thanks for looking

ad11583c,
Welcome to the Side Imaging Forums!

Looks like you are getting sonar cross-talk in the 2D sonar.  This is common when you are running more than one sonar unit at the same frequency at the same time.  Try turning the Noise Filter menu on and up in the 958c DI unit and see if that will filter out the interference for you.  If that does not help enough you can try setting the Lower Range menu to a setting other than what the 998c Si unit is currently using.

I tried changing the frequency and then setting the depth manually instead of auto.  That was a pain cause I was always raising it and lowering it.  From what I understand there isnt a way to share transducers between the 998 and 958 so this doesnt happen, correct?

That is a 958c DI model; so no there is no way to have both units share a transducer.
Did you try the Noise Filter menu adjustment I mentioned?

I did. Didn't work for me. Frustrating that the sales man at store said I could do this set up.

I do appreciate all your help with this Greg.

Sorry the Noise Filter did not work for you ad11583c as it usually helps.  Sonar interference can come and go based on a whole bunch of factors, many of which we do not control.
