Title: Connecting and Disconnecting 1198c SI-Tips/Suggestions?
Post by: scgmc on May 01, 2013, 12:40:57 PM
I keep my boat tied up to my dock at the lake, but only get to visit it twice a month. It's a reasonably safe area but I don't like to tempt people.
For this reason, I remove my Humminbirds after the weekend is over, place them in a padded case, and lock them up inside the house.

On my boat I have a 798 HD SI and a 1198c SI connected with Ethernet.
The 798 has the quick disconnect mount so it removes easily. The 1198 isn't terrible but I do fear all this connecting and disconnecting will wear on the connectors.
(If a well designed quick disconnect kit was available for the 1198 I would buy it in a minute- but I haven't seen one.)
I'm an electronic maintenance tech by trade so I know how to be as careful as possible, but I was wondering if anyone can share their experiences or tips doing this action.
Specifically: Is there one connector that gave you trouble? Is there a preferred order for connecting/disconnecting you can recommend? Ever upgraded the connectors?

Your concern about wear and tear of the connectors is justified. A lot of people report having to fiddle with their power connector in various ways to improve the connection after the unit ages.

Chuck, who retired as the moderator of this forum has posted about this in the past.  He used his units primarily for SAR.

If my memory is correct, he talked about splicing a high quality male/female connector that he used as a disconnect to remove and move his  units between boats.

I have an electronics background myself, and did a little research on a good connector set to splice in, but never did proceed with the project.

Found that thread here   http://forums.sideimagingsoft.com/index.php?topic=2845.msg20615#msg20615 (http://forums.sideimagingsoft.com/index.php?topic=2845.msg20615#msg20615)

If anyone can recommend good connectors for this purpose I would have a revived interest in doing it.

Thanks Bob. I did a Search before posting -but missed that thread. Appreciate it.
Thinking along those lines, my concern is the transducer connection. Extra connectors/junctions tend to change analog signals- which I assume is what comes from the transducer.
Getting some specifics from one of the guys who did this already would be helpful. Knowing exactly what kind of connector they have used would be helpful.
Ampenol, Cannon, and AMP Mil-Spec multi-pin connectors come to mind. A picture would be great.
