Title: Making an 858 portable.

 My Father comes up every year for a month or so, in the spring to fish. And If i turn my bow mounted 858 into a portable he'll have the lake master chip and my way points :).  I have two 1 " ram mounts with suction bases. And I was wondering which gps puck I should get, the same one it came with "I,m not taking the one off my boat" or the newer  GPS-HS GPS Receiver or will that one even work on the 858. And is the software for the 858 stable for the newer puck? Another question does anyone know if ram makes a 1" ball adapter for the humminbird gps puck?

Any of the GPS Receivers would work Gat.  It just depends on how much you want to spend versus what is available and what features you want him to have.

GR16 – would work well and is the least expensive.  Will work on any software the 858 has.  2.5 meter accuracy (actual in use measurements showed 1.8 meter CEP accuracy).

GR50 – if you can still find one.  Will work with any software on the 858 unit. 2.5 meter accuracy as well (actual in use measurements showed 1.5 meter CEP accuracy).

GRP – is as accurate as the GPS-HS (it is the same GPS Receiver minus the heading sensor) and requires the 6.300 or higher software to work with the unit.  2.5 meter accuracy (no actual use accuracy data at this time).

GPS-HS – I wouldn’t get this unless he needs the boat heading at very low speeds or when stationary as it is more money or at least I would put it on my boat and take the other GPS Receiver one off and let him use it.  It requires the current 6.610 software to operate it.  2.5 meter accuracy (no actual use accuracy data at this time).


I am not sure whether the latest software for the 858c unit (version 6.610) affected it as it has some of the Si units.

 Thanks for your reply Greg, much appreciated. I went ahead and ordered the newest puck. I plan on getting a Terrova bow mounted trolling motor next year. Then possibly the Ipilot depending upon the reviews and responses of firmware and hardware.
I will not get an Ipilot and then lose foot control that'll never happen so I'll wait until I replace the perfectly good #55 Powerdrive v2.
Hard to believe they can't engineer a work around for the foot control issue On the Powerdrive/ Ipilot combo. :-\
