Title: Gps not connected 998si/858di
Post by: powerfinesse89 on April 17, 2013, 01:23:04 PM
I just had these two units installed on my boat linked together via ethernet. When I turn these units on hooked up with the ethernet or as stand alone units the diagnostics tells me that both gps units are"not connected".

The connections are solid.

Would extreme low voltage allow this to happen although the sonar and imaging works fine?

I know I have to download the newest software but I figured  when I unhook the ethernet and use these as stand alone units that it should not matter and that the gps' should be connected.

We have seen low power issues cause multiple problems and I would not completely rule it out.  Try direct connecting one of the units to your boat’s cranking battery and see if the GPS will work than.

The Ethernet connection should not make a difference.

If you know of someone else with a Humminbird unit that has an external GPS Receiver, you could try testing one of your units (or both) on their boat to see if the GPS will work there or not.

I have a champion bass boat that has a "power" switch at the dash. The company that did the installation wired it directly to that switch so running it directly to the battery is now not an option

I am going to test tonight or tomorrow night. Battery will be fully charged, I cannot guarantee it was when initially powered on. I will use my multi meter to check voltage at battery and use the unit to tell me what its getting there

A couple of things here:
Make sure that you are testing these outside where the GPS Receiver can get the signals from the GPS satellites.   Some GPS Receiver will not signal the unit that they are connected until they get a fix on their position.

Which GPS Receivers do you have (look on the top of each) and how are they connected to the units?

I did not get a chance to test last night, I may have time tonight.

I am outside when I power on the units.

I believe I have the 50 on the transom for the 998 @ the console and the HS on the bow for the 858.

So are you saying on the Diagnostics view it will say "not connected" until they get a fix? Possibly?

Possibly.

On the 858c DI unit you will have to be running the latest software.  If that is a GR50 connected to the 998 unit it should be fine with whatever software is in it.

Greg,

I am wondering if I can download the 6.310 for this instead of the 6.610?? I have yet to hear anything good about 6.610. What do you think? Wil the HS work with this?

No, the GPS-HS requires the 6.570 or higher software to work on your 858c DI unit.
