Title: Asking a dumb question
Post by: ohmitr on April 15, 2013, 05:53:51 PM
I'm calling my question dumb because I probably already know the answer and I'm sure it's been asked a number of times and I'm too lazy to search for it for more than about 20 minutes.  Here goes!

I see all kinds of samples of HB side imaging where the objects on the bottom seem very large.  But on my 798 unit they are so small I can really only see there's something there but can't distinguish what it is.  Also the amount of bottom that scrolls by seems much much longer than it needs to be compared to DI and Sonar.  I'd say the screen shows possibly 10 times the bottom area that DI or Sonar does.  As an example, as part of a project I dropped some 40" tall PVC trees in 10 fow in my home lake.  On DI and Sonar they show up quite large but are so small on SI if I didn't know they were there I'd never recognize them.  I go down to as little as 25 ft. out on each side and that helps a little but very little.  Also I have the unit set on 200/83 khz.  Am I doing something wrong or is that just the way things are with the 798?

Things will appear small on the 798 unit because of the size of its display.  However there are things that you can do to make these objects appear larger.
 - You have already reduced the Si Range menu but you may want to also try using the Contour feature as well (only if the object is out to the side of the boat).
 - Use the Zoom function in the Si sonar.
 - Set the Si sonar to display only one side at a time.  This will use the whole width of the display to show the Si sonar to that side.
 - Reduce your boat speed and/or increase the Chart Speed on the unit.  This will help show objects in a larger vertical orientation.
