Title: Issues with running two Lakemaster Cards
Post by: KBarr on April 11, 2013, 11:34:51 PM
Greetings,

I have a 1198si and a 958di. Both of my units appear to not work if you run two map cards in the SD slots.  If you power up the unit with the cards installed, the map screens are grey with no information, you also you do not get a CHART SELECT option from the CHART TAB.  If you remove either card, it works fine.  I have tried this with both my v3.0 Lakemaster chips as well as the v4.0 ones.  Both units have the latest FW 6.610.  Anyone run across this issue?

Great forum and thanks for putting up with a newbie...

Kevin

Yep they don't like two cards in there at once. Second slot is normally a blank chip for exporting your waypoints or whatever.

I don't have 2 lakemasters but I do run 1 lakemaster and 1 navionics all the time.

Hi,
Seeing a grey mapping screen when you have two Lakemaster chips installed in your unit is a known problem that has yet to be fixed. The last software level that would support two Lakemaster chips installed was 6.49 (speaking in 998c terms). Every time a new software level is released, that is the first thing I check! Come on HB, what's the problem????????????????

What is the advantage of running two chips? I am guessing you are fishing two different Navionics regions often.

I don't think any of these units were designed to use
two mapping cards at the same time.

There used to be/still is? a chart select option where you
specified where the map card was (left or right).

These maps take up precious memory.
I don't think any unit is capable of loading in two maps
at the same time.

Sure the units are designed for two cards, hence the Auto Card select in he system.  This is just poor FW.

Auto-select is for the system to choose which card is
the one and only map card.
The other card should be for recordings and snapshots.

I'd like to see what Greg says about these units
using two map cards at the same time.

Hi,
Only one chip data set is ever loaded into the HB memory at a given time. Each map data set consists (whether its' Contour XD, a Lake Master chip, or a Navionics chip) of many files which are broken down by location (GPS detected position or user intervention position) and map scale (IE.units of miles, KM, or feet). The partial map data set that is selected is determined by either the HB unit (via Auto chip select) or the user (via chip select menu) selecting the inserted map chip.

The "loading charts" message seen on the HB unit (any map screen) is the indication that one of the files of that map data (chip or internal) set is being loaded into the (units) local (mapping) memory.

That's all that is going on in ANY HB unit with mapping capability.

I have had two Lake Master chips (MN and WI) installed in my 998c since I purchased it in 2010 (Rev’s 1 thru 4). I do this as a convenience since I fish in both states. I live in MN but I can have my boat launched on a WI body of water in less than 20 minutes.

Greg: Correct me if I'm wrong. That is my understanding of how a HB unit (mapping capable) processes map data.

I believe that you are correct Roger.
